मंदबुद्धि बालक विद्वान वरदराज बनकर उभरा

बच्चे उसे मंदबुद्धि कहकर चिढ़ाते थे। एक दिन वह कुएं के पास बैठा था, तभी उसकी नजर पत्थर पर पड़े निशान की ओर गई। उसने सोचा – जब कठोर पत्थर पर निशान बन सकते हैं तो मुझे भी विद्या आ सकती है।

विद्यालय में वह मंदबुद्धि कहलाता था। उसके अध्यापक उससे नाराज रहते थे क्योंकि उसकी बुद्धि का स्तर औसत से भी कम था। कक्षा में उसका प्रदर्शन सदैव निराशाजनक ही होता था।

अपने सहपाठियों के मध्य वह उपहास का विषय था। विद्यालय में वह जैसे ही प्रवेश करता, चारों ओर उस पर व्यंग्य बाणों की बौछार सी होने लगती। इन सब बातों से परेशान होकर उसने विद्यालय आना ही छोड़ दिया। एक दिन वह मार्ग में निर्थक ही भ्रमण कर रहा था। घूमते हुए उसे जोरों की प्यास लगी। वह इधर-उधर पानी खोजने लगा। अंत में उसे एक कुआं दिखाई दिया।

वह वहां गया और प्यास बुझाई। वह काफी थक चुका था, इसलिए पानी पीने के बाद वहीं बैठ गया। उसकी दृष्टि पत्थर पर पड़े उस निशान पर गई जिस पर बार-बार कुएं से पानी खींचने के कारण रस्सी के निशान पड़ गए थे। वह मन ही मन विचार करने लगा कि जब बार-बार पानी खींचने से इतने कठोर पत्थर पर रस्सी के निशान पड़ सकते हैं तो निरंतर अभ्यास से मुझे भी विद्या आ सकती है।

उसने यह विचार गांठ में बांध लिया और पुन: विद्यालय जाना आरंभ कर दिया। उसकी लगन देखकर अध्यापकों ने भी उसे सहयोग किया। उसने मन लगाकर अधिक परिश्रम किया। कुछ सालों बाद यही विद्यार्थी उद्भट विद्वान वरदराज के रूप में विख्यात हुआ, जिसने संस्कृत में मुग्धबोध और लघुसिद्धांत कौमुदी जैसे ग्रंथों की रचना की। आशय यह है कि दुर्बलताएं अपराजेय नहीं होतीं। यदि धैर्य, परिश्रम और लगन से कार्य किया जाए तो उन पर विजय प्राप्त कर प्रशंसनीय लक्ष्यों की प्राप्ति की जा सकती है।
