दुकान का मैनेजर शास्त्री जी को एक से बढ़ कर एक साड़ियां दिखाने लगा। सभी कीमती साडि़यां थीं। शास्त्री जी बोले- भाई, मुझे इतनी महंगी साड़ियां नहीं चाहिए। कम कीमत वाली दिखाओ।

इस पर मैनेजर ने कहा- सर आप इन्हें अपना ही समझिए, दाम की तो कोई बात ही नहीं है। यह तो हम सबका सौभाग्य है कि आप पधारे।

शास्त्री जी उसका आशय समझ गए। उन्होंने कहा- आपको साड़ी की कीमत लेनी होगी। मैं जो तुम से कह रहा हूं उस पर ध्यान दो और मुझे कम कीमत की साड़ियां ही दिखाओ और उनकी कीमत बताते जाओ। तब मैनेजर ने शास्त्री जी को थोड़ी सस्ती साड़ियां दिखानी शुरू कीं।

शास्त्री जी ने कहा-ये भी मेरे लिए महंगी ही हैं। और कम कीमत की दिखाओ। मैनेजर को एकदम सस्ती साड़ी दिखाने में संकोच हो रहा था। शास्त्री जी इसे भांप गए। उन्होंने कहा- दुकान में जो सबसे सस्ती साड़ियां हों, वह दिखाओ। मुझे वही चाहिए।

आखिरकार मैनेजर ने उनके मनमुताबिक साड़ियां निकालीं। शास्त्री जी ने उनमें से कुछ चुन लीं और उनकी कीमत अदा कर चले गए। उनके जाने के बाद बड़ी देर तक दुकान के कर्मचारी और वहां मौजूद कुछ ग्राहक शास्त्री जी की सादगी की चर्चा करते रहे। वे उनके प्रति श्रद्धा से भर उठे
