बहुत पुरानी बात है कि चीन में एक बौद्ध भिक्षुणी रहती थीं। उनके पास गौतम बुद्ध की एक सोने की मूर्ति थी जिसकी वह दिन-रात पूजा करती थीं। जब चीन में महाबुद्ध उत्सव की शुरूआत हुई तो वहां कई लोग आए।

वहां भिक्षुणी भी बुद्ध की मूर्ति लेकर पहुंची। बौद्ध भिक्षुणी चाहती थी, कि वह जो साम्रगी अपने साथ लाई हैं। उससे सिर्फ उसकी बुद्ध प्रतिमा की ही पूजा हो। उसने सोचा कि यदि मैं अपना धूप-दीप सबके सामने जलाउंगी तो अन्य प्रतिमाएं भी उसकी सुगंध लूट लेंगी।

ऐसी परिस्थिति से बचने के लिए उस भिक्षुणी ने बांस की एक पोंगली को स्वर्ण प्रतिमा के साथ सटाकर अपने धूप का धुआं रोक दिया। थोड़ी देर में धुएं के कारण स्वर्ण निर्मित प्रतिमा का मुंह काला हो गया। मुखाकृति काली होने के कारण दर्शकों को बौद्ध प्रतिमा कुरुप लगने लगी।

ऐसे में उस प्रतिमा को लाने वाली और उसे पूजने वाली भिक्षुणी की हर जगह आलोचना होने लगी। ऐसी स्थिति में वह खिन्न हो गई। भिक्षुणी ने आयोजक से शिकायत की। तब उन्होंने जांच-पड़ताल की।

और कहा, संकीर्णता एवं प्रदर्शन वृति के कारण उपासना प्रभावहीन और आडंबर मात्र रह जाती है। जीवन के फैलाव ही प्रगति का पहला कदम है। जो लोग इस तथ्य को नहीं समझते वे निंदा एवं आलोचना के पात्र बन जाते हैं।
