एक विधवा थी, उसका एक पुत्र था। पुत्र ज्यादा होशियार न था, लेकिन मां के प्रयासों के चलते वह पढ़-लिख गया। उस मां का बेटा वैज्ञानिक बनना चाहता था। एक दिन उसने अपनी मां से अपनी इच्छा प्रकट की।

मां बोली, ‘बेटा! मैं तुझे वैज्ञानिक बनने में पूरी सहायता करूंगी।’ मां ने फिर एक वैज्ञानिक का पता लगाया, और उसके घर अपने बेटे को ले गईं। वैज्ञानिक ने बेटे से बात की। उसे उस लड़के में अदम्य साहस दिखाई दिया।

वैज्ञानिक बोला, ‘आप अपने बेटे को दो दिनों के लिए मेरे घर छोड़ जाइए, मैं इस लड़के की परीक्षा लूंगा।’ उधर वैज्ञानिक ने उस लड़के को अपनी प्रयोगशाला की सफाई का कार्य सौंपा। लड़के ने यंत्रों को उठाकर चमका दिया और सब कुछ व्यवस्थित कर दिया।

तीसरे दिन उस लड़के की मां आई तो वैज्ञानिक बोला, ‘महोदया! आपका बेटा महान वैज्ञानिक बनेगा। यह प्रतिभावान भी है और जीवन की सफलता के दो गुण स्वच्छता और सुव्यवस्था भी इसे अच्छे तरीके से मालूम है।

यही बालक बड़ा होकर प्रसिद्ध वैज्ञानिक थॉमस अल्वा एडीसन के नाम से विख्यात हुआ। जिनके आविष्कार बल्ब की रोशनी से दुनिया जगमगा रही है।
