The incident happened when Swami Vivekananda was in Vrindavan. walking down the street. Some red mouth monkeys followed them. Swamiji started running away. The monkey also started attacking them rapidly. Then a sensible person said, Do not run away. Stand out in front of them. Duke it out.

Swamiji did the same and the monkey fled. Referring to this incident, Swamiji used to say to his disciples that difficulties in life are also like these monkeys. On escaping from difficulties they grow and resolve on the face.

The Maharaja of Khetri (Rajasthan) had very respected Swami Vivekananda. Swamiji used to believe in idol worship, but Maharaj’s thinking was in sharp contrast. Once the Maharaja said, what is God in Swamiji statue?

The room in which this discussion was going was in which there was a picture of Maharaj. Swamiji asked his servant, take down this picture. The servant did the same. After this, Swamiji told him, spit on this picture. The servant could not misbehave.

On this, Swamiji said to the king, This is only a piece of paper. This will not offend you. Yet the servant did not spit. In a way you are completely present in this picture. That’s why your devotee-servant could not insult this. This is what applies to idol worship.
