एक गांव में विद्यार्थियों की टोली रोज दूसरे गांव की पाठशाला में जाती और साथ लौट आती। एक दिन वापिस लौटते समय उन्हें लगा कि उनमें से एक विद्यार्थी कम है। खोजने पर पता चला कि वह विद्यार्थी पीछे रह गया।

सभी उसके पास पहुंचे। एक विद्यार्थी ने पूछा, ‘तुम पीछे क्यों रुक गए हो?’ उस विद्यार्थी ने वहीं से कहा, ‘ठहरो मैं आता हूं।’ यह कहकर वह धरती में गड़े हुए खूंटे को पकड़ने लगा । उसे जोर से हिलाया और उसे फेंक कर टोली में आ पहुंचा।

तभी उसके मित्र ने कहा, ‘तुमने उस खूंटे को क्यों उखाड़ा?’ तब उस विद्यार्थी ने कहा, वह बीच में था और वहां आने-जाने वाला हर व्यक्ति उसकी ठोकर से गिर पढ़ता था। इसलिए मैंने उसे हटाना ही उचित समझा। विद्यार्थी की यह बात सुनकर सभी बच्चे आश्चर्यचकित हो गए। यह विद्यार्थी और कोई नहीं बल्कि लौह पुरुष सरदार बल्लभ भाई पटेल थे।
