प्राणी में भगवान्

अफ्रीका के एक गाँव में जन्मे आगस्टाइन जन्मजात प्रतिभाशाली थे। उच्च शिक्षा प्राप्त करने के बाद वे अमेरिका की मिलान यूनिवर्सिटी में शिक्षक नियुक्त हुए। वे ‘खाओ-पीओ मौज करो’ के सिद्धांत में विश्वास रखते थे और असंयम व स्वेच्छाचारी जीवन बिताते थे।

एक दिन वे ईसाई प्रचारक पादरी एंबोसे के सत्संग में गए। मनुष्य को असत्य, हिंसा, यौनाचार आदि का दंड भोगना ही पड़ता है-ईसा के इस वाक्य ने उनके मन में हलचल मचा दी।

वे शिक्षक पद से त्यागपत्र देकर अफ्रीका लौट आए और अपना तमाम धन गरीबों-असहायों के कल्याण कार्य के लिए अर्पित कर सात्विक और संयमी जीवन जीने लगे। वे पापी से संत बन गए।

आगस्टाइन ने ‘द सिटी ऑफ गॉड’ पुस्तक लिखी। उन्होंने लिखा, ‘ईश्वर प्रकाश एवं दिव्य आनंद है। जो शुभ है, उससे वह प्रेम करता है। जब आत्मा अपने आपको ईश्वर को समर्पित कर देती है, तब स्वयं यज्ञ बन जाती है। प्रभु को समर्पित होने वाला भौतिक आकांक्षाओं से मुक्त होकर प्रत्येक प्राणी में भगवान् के दर्शन कर उससे प्रेम करने लगता है।

संत आगस्टाइन ने ईसा के उपदेश का पालन करते हुए अपने जीवन में किए गए पाप कर्मों और अनाचार को सार्वजनिक रूप से बेपरदा कर पश्चात्ताप किया।

उन्होंने भगवान् से प्रार्थना की, ‘हे प्रभो, अहंकार और कुसंग में फँसकर किए गए दुष्कर्मों की क्षमा माँगते हुए आपकी शरण में हूँ। मैं घोरतम पाप करता रहा। धन-संपत्ति को अपना मानकर दुरुपयोग करता रहा। आपकी असीम कृपा से ही घृणित जीवन से विरत हो पाया हूँ।’

आगे चलकर आगस्टाइन की गणना प्रमुख ईसाई संतों में हुई।

English Translation

Born in a village in Africa, Augustine was a born genius. After receiving higher education, he was appointed a teacher at the University of Milan, USA. He believed in the principle of ‘Eat-Drink, Have fun’ and lived a life of self-control and self-discipline.

One day he went to the satsang of the Christian evangelist Pastor Ambose. Man has to suffer the punishment of untruth, violence, sexual conduct etc. – This sentence of Jesus created a stir in his mind.

He returned to Africa after resigning from the post of teacher and devoted all his wealth to the welfare work of the poor and helpless and started living a sattvik and temperate life. He became a saint from a sinner.

Augustine wrote the book ‘The City of God’. He wrote, ‘God is light and divine bliss. He loves what is good. When the soul surrenders itself to God, then it becomes a sacrifice. One who is surrendered to the Lord, freed from material desires, sees the Lord in every living being and starts loving Him.

Saint Augustine, following the teachings of Jesus, publicly repented by exposing the sins and incest committed in his life.

He prayed to the Lord, ‘O Lord, I take refuge in You, seeking forgiveness for the misdeeds I have committed by being trapped in arrogance and mischief. I have been committing the gravest sin. Misusing money and property as his own. It is only by your infinite grace that I have been able to escape from this disgusting life.

Later Augustine was counted among the major Christian saints.
