सच्ची सेवा का मर्म

सभी धर्मग्रंथों में सेवा-सहायता को सर्वोपरि धर्म बताया गया है। महर्षि वेदव्यास ने अष्टादश पुराणों में लिखा है,

‘परोपकाराय पुण्याय पापाय परपीडनम्।’ अर्थात् परोपकार पुण्य है और दूसरों को पीडित करना पाप।

कुछ प्राप्त करने की इच्छा से की गई सेवा को शास्त्रों में निष्फल बताया गया है। कहा गया है, ‘यदि सेवा कर्तव्यपालन या आत्मिक प्रसन्नता के लिए की जा रही है, तो वह असली सेवा है और किसी लोभ से अगर सेवा की जा रही है, तो वह महज दिखावा है। उसका फल नहीं मिलता।

ईशोपनिषद् में कहा गया है, सभी प्राणियों में आत्मा के दर्शन का जो भाव हैं, वही सेवा का मूलाधार हैं। वही सच्चा मानव है, जो किसी भूखे प्यासे व्यक्ति को देखकर उसकी भूख-प्यास को अपनी समझकर उसे अपनी आत्मा मानकर भोजन व पानी देने को तत्पर रहता है।

इस प्रकार की निष्काम सेवा की भावना बहुत ही पुण्यवान व्यक्ति में पैदा होती है। यहाँ तक कहा गया है-‘

सेवा धर्म परम गहनो योगिनामध्यगम्यः ।

अर्थात् सेवा धर्म इतना कठिन है कि योगियों के लिए भी अगम्य है।’ याज्ञवल्क्यजी ने लिखा है, ‘आत्मदर्शन भाव से की गई सेवा ही फलदायी होती है।

आध्यात्मिक विभूति हनुमानप्रसाद पोद्दार भीषण ठंड के दिनों में आधी रात के समय गीता वाटिका (गोरखपुर) से चुपचाप निकलते थे तथा ठंड से सिकुड़ रहे गरीबों को कंबल-चादर ओढ़ा दिया करते थे एक बार एक पत्रकार ने कंबल ओढ़ाने का चित्र ले लिया। पोद्दारजी ने विनम्रता से उसे कहा, ‘यह चित्र अखबार में नहीं छापना, न किसी को बताना, नहीं तो मैं पुण्य की जगह पाप का भागी बनूँगा।

English Translation

In all the scriptures, service-help has been described as the paramount religion. Maharishi Ved Vyas has written in the Ashtadasha Puranas, ‘Paropkarai Punayaya Papaya Parpidanam’, meaning charity is virtue and causing suffering to others is a sin.

Service done with the desire to achieve something is said to be fruitless in the scriptures. It has been said, ‘If service is done for the performance of duty or for spiritual pleasure, then it is real service and if it is done out of any greed, then it is a mere pretense. It does not bear fruit.

It is said in the Ishopanishad, the spirit of the vision of the soul in all beings, that is the basis of service. He is the true human who, seeing a hungry and thirsty person, considering his hunger and thirst as his own, is ready to give food and water to him as his soul.

The feeling of this kind of selfless service is born in a very virtuous person. So far it has been said – ‘Seva dharma param jewels yoginadhyagamyaah’.

That is, the dharma of service is so difficult that it is unreachable even for yogis.

Spiritual figure Hanumanprasad Poddar used to quietly leave Geeta Vatika (Gorakhpur) at midnight on severe cold days and used to cover the poor shrinking from the cold with blankets and sheets. Once a journalist took a picture of wearing a blanket. Poddarji politely told him, ‘Don’t print this picture in the newspaper, or tell it to anyone, otherwise I will be a partaker of sin instead of virtue.
