दान में अभिमान कैसा

ईसा के एक शिष्य को शेखी बघारने की आदत थी। एक दिन वह ईसा के दर्शन को पहुँचा और बोला, ‘आज मैं पाँच गरीबों को खाना खिलाकर आया हूँ। जब तक मैं किसी की सहायता न कर दूँ, मुझे चैन नहीं मिलता। बिना प्रार्थना किए मुझे नींद भी नहीं आती।

ईसा उसे उपदेश देते हुए कहते हैं, ‘तुम्हारा आज का सेवा पुण्य समाप्त हो गया। जो दिखावे के लिए किसी की सहायता करता है, समझ लो कि वह नाटक करता है।

किसी की सहायता गुप्त रूप से करनी चाहिए।’ कुछ क्षण रुककर उन्होंने आगे कहा, ‘तुम्हारा सेवा-सहायता का कार्य इतना गुप्त हो कि बाएँ हाथ को भी पता न चल सके कि दाहिने हाथ से तुमने क्या दान दिया है या किसी की मदद की है।’

ईसा मसीह सार्वजनिक प्रार्थना को महत्त्व नहीं देते थे उन्होंने कहा था, ‘जब तुम प्रार्थना करो, तब पाखंडियों के सदृश मत बनो क्योंकि सभागृहों और चौराहों पर खड़े होकर प्रार्थना करनेवालों की यही आकांक्षा होती है कि लोग उन्हें देखें और सराहें।

पिता परमेश्वर गुप्त कार्यों को भी देखता है, इसलिए वह तुम्हें उन कर्मों का भी फल देगा। ढिंढोरा पीटने से कोई लाभ नहीं।’

गांधीजी कहते थे, ‘जो किसी से कुछ स्वार्थ सिद्ध करने या समाज में प्रशंसित होने के लिए किसी की सहायता करता है, वह पुण्य नहीं, पाप अर्जित करता है।

किसी प्रकार का स्वार्थ अधर्म है।’ वैसे भी कहा गया है, “अहंकार व स्वार्थ का सर्वदा त्याग करके की गई निष्काम सेवा ही फलदायी होती है। संपत्ति हमारी है नहीं, फिर किसी को देने में अभिमान कैसा?

English Translation

A disciple of Jesus had a habit of boasting. One day he reached the vision of Jesus and said, ‘Today I have come after feeding five poor people. I don’t get rest until I help someone. I can’t even sleep without praying.

Jesus while preaching to him says, ‘Your service merit of today is over. One who helps someone to show off, understand that he pretends.

Jesus Christ did not give importance to public prayer He said, ‘When you pray, do not be like hypocrites, because it is the desire of those who pray standing in synagogues and squares that people will see and appreciate them.

God the Father sees even secret works, so He will give you the fruits of those deeds as well. There is no use in beating drums.

Gandhiji used to say, ‘Whoever helps someone to fulfill some selfishness or to be admired in the society, he earns sin, not virtue.

Any kind of selfishness is adharma. The property is not ours, then how is pride in giving it to someone?
