रात का समय था। विश्व गुरु बसवेश्वर सोए हुए थे। एक चोर उनकी पत्नी नीला के गहने उतारने लगा। नीला की नींद खुल गई। वह जोर से चिल्लाने लगी। चोर भाग गया। बसवेश्वर जाग गए।

उन्होंने अपनी पत्नी से पूछा कि, ‘क्या हुआ भाग्यवान? नीला ने बताया कि, एक चोर ने मेरे गहने उतार लिए हैं और तुम पूछ रहे हो क्या हुआ।’

इतने में पहरेदारों ने चोर को पकड़ लिया। बसवेश्वर ने नीला से कहा, ‘नीला ! मैंने समझा था कि तुम मेरी सहचारिणी और आदर्श पत्नी हो, परंतु तुमने निष्ठा को नहीं निभाया। तुमने सारे गहने उतारकर उसे क्यों नही दे दिए।’

नीला पति बसवेश्वर का मुंह ताकने लगी। बसवेश्वर ने कहा, चौर कौन है? चोरी करने वाला नहीं, बल्कि आवश्यकता से अधिक रखने वाला ही चोर है।
