एक नगरवधू की सीख ने मठाधीश को कर दिया लज्जित

पाटलिपुत्र की एक नगरवधू थी। उसकी सुंदरता की चर्चा दूर-दूर तक होती थी। उसकी एक मुस्कान पर बड़े-बड़े लोग सब कुछ लुटाने को तैयार रहते थे। एक दिन शाल्वन बुद्ध पीठ के मठाधीश वसंत गुप्त उधर से निकले तो नगरवधू पर उनकी नजर पड़ी। उन्होंने उसे देखा तो सब कुछ भूल गए। वे उसी संत वेश में नगरवधू के घर जा पहुंचे।

नगरवधू का अनुमान था कि वे भिक्षा के लिए आए होंगे, इसलिए उसने उनका खूब स्वागत-सत्कार किया और अपनी एक सेविका को उन्हें भिक्षा देने के लिए कहा। पर वसंत गुप्त का इरादा तो कुछ और ही था। वह तो प्रणय निवेदन कर रहे थे।

नगरवधू के लिए यह किसी आघात से कम न था। पर उसने तिरस्कार करना तो ठीक न समझा, पर शर्त लगा दी कि इतना धन वे दे सकें, तो ही उनकी मनोकामना पूर्ण हो सकेगी। वसंत गुप्त चल दिए और जिन धनिकों से उनका परिचय था, उन सभी से रत्न मांगकर उन्होंने उतनी संपदा जुटा ली। फिर वे लंबे डग भरते हुए आए और वह सब कुछ नगरवधू के चरणों में रख दिया। नगरवधू ने उन रत्नों से अपने पैर रगड़-रगड़ कर घिसे और उन्हें नाली में फेंक दिया।

यह देख वसंत गुप्त घबराए। नगरबधू ने उनसे कहा, ‘देव। आप का वेश और तप मेरे मलिन शरीर से कहीं ज्यादा श्रेष्ठ है। उसका उपार्जन इसी प्रकार नाली में चला जाएगा, जैसे कि यह रत्नराशि इस गंदी नाली में बह गई।’ नगरवधू की यह बात वसंत गुप्त के हृदय को तीर की तरह चुभी। अचानक उनका विवेक जागा। वे लज्जित हुए। वे नगरवधू को प्रणाम कर उलटे पैर लौट गए।

There was a Nagarawadhu of Pataliputra. His beauty was discussed far and wide. On one of his smiles, big men were ready to loot everything. One day the Vasant Gupta, the abbot of Shalvan Buddha Peeth, came out on the spot and looked at Nagarvadhu. They saw him and forgot everything. They went to the house of Nagarvadhu in the saint’s way.

Nagarvadhu was supposed to have come for alms, so he welcomed him very much and asked one of his servants to give him a beggar. But the intention of the spring secret was only something else. He was pleading for love.

It was not less than a shock for Nagarvadhu. But he did not think it was okay to disdain, but he bet that his money will be fulfilled only if he can give so much money. Spring went in secret and they collected so much wealth by demanding gems from all the riches they were familiar with. Then they came and filled the long dug and kept everything at the feet of the Nagarvadhu. Nagarvadhu rubbed his feet with those gems and threw them into the gutter.

Seeing this spring awakened secretly. Nagarbadhu said to them, ‘God Your cloak and tenacity is superior to my dirty body. His procurement will move in the same way as the Ratnaraishi was swept away in this dirty drain. This talk of the Nagarvadhu is like the arrow of spring secret, like the arrow. Suddenly their conscience awakens. They were ashamed. They bowed down to the Nagarvadhu and returned the opposite foot.
