अकबर ने अपने दरबार को सभी के लिए खोल रखा था उसमें चाहे कोई व्यक्ति अपनी फ़रियाद लेकर आये या फिर अपनी प्रतिभा का प्रद्रशन करने आये। एक बार की बात है एक रामदेव नाम का गायक अपने संगीत को अकबर के दरबार में दिखाने की मंशा से राजस्थान से आया।

वह अकबर के महल में प्रवेश करने लगा लेकिन तभी वहाँ पर खड़े दरबान ने उसको रोक दिया। रामदेव ने जब कारण पूछा तो दरबान ने कहा की अकबर के दरबार में जाने के लिए आपको 5 अशर्फिया देनी होंगी। गायक ने बोला मेरे पास अशर्फिया तो नहीं है मै बहुत गरीब हूँ। दरबान ने बोला यदि अशर्फिया नहीं है तो आप राजा अकबर से नहीं मिल सकते।

उसके जिद्द करने पर दरबान रामदेव को अपने मंत्री के पास लेकर गया मंत्री ने भी उसको यही बोला यहाँ पर राजा अकबर से मिलने के लिए बहुत लोग आते है इसलिए जिसके पास हमें पांच अशर्फिया देने के लिए होती है हम केवल उनको ही राजा अकबर से मिलने देते है।

यदि तुम्हारे पास अशर्फिया है तो तुम दरबार में जा सकते हो। रामदेव के पास अशर्फिया नहीं थी इसलिए उसको बाहर निकाल दिया गया। वह बहुत दुखी हो गया और जाने से पहले उसने बीरबल से मिलने की सोची जिसका उसने बहुत नाम सुन रखा था।

वह बीरबल के घर पहुँचा और उसने बीरबल को सारी बात बताई की किस तरह दरबान ने 5 अशर्फिया नहीं होने पर उसको राजा अकबर से मिलने नहीं दिया। बीरबल इस पर बहुत आश्चर्य चकित हो गए। बीरबल ने रामदेव को इसका हल निकालने का आश्वाशन दिया।

बीरबल बहुत चतुर थे। बीरबल खुद एक गायककार का भेष बना कर अकबर के महल में जाने लगे। तभी उनको उसी दरबान ने रोक दिया। दरबान ने बीरबल से भी पांच अशर्फिया मांगी। लेकिन बीरबल ने बोला उसके पास अशर्फिया नहीं है।

दरबान ने बोला तो तुम अंदर नहीं जा सकते। बीरबल ने कहा लेकिन मै बहुत अच्छा गाना गाता हूँ मेरा गाना सुनकर बादशाह जरूर मुझे इनाम देंगे तो उस इनाम का आधा हिस्सा मै तुम्हे दे दूंगा। उसकी इस बात को सुनकर दरबान उसको अपने मंत्री के पास लेकर गया।

बीरबल ने मंत्री को भी यही बताया की जो भी इनाम मिलेगा उसका आधा हिस्सा मै तुमको दे दूंगा। वह मंत्री आधे इनाम के लालच में आ गया और बीरबल को दरबार में भेज दिया। दरबार में जाकर बीरबल ने बताया वह राजस्थान से अपना संगीत पेश करने आया है।

अकबर ने बीरबल को गाना सुनाने की इजाज़त दी इसके बाद उसने अपना गाना सुनाया जिससे बादशाह अकबर और सभी दरबार के लोग खुश हो गए। अकबर ने बोला हमें तुम्हारा गाना बहुत पसंद आया तुम हमसे जो इनाम मांगना चाहते हो मांग सकते हो।

बीरबल ने बोला महाराज मुझे इनाम ने 100 कोड़े चाहिए। उसका यह जवाब सुनकर सब हैरान हो गए। अकबर ने पूछा क्या तुम सच में किसी ख़जाने की जगह कोड़े इनाम में चाहते हो। बीरबल ने हा कहा इसके बाद एक व्यक्ति कोड़े लगाने के लिए वहाँ पर आ गया।

तभी बीरबल ने बोला लेकिन मेरे आधे इनाम का हिस्सा किसी और के साथ बटेगा जिसको मैंने वादा कर रखा है अकबर ने जब पूछा तो बीरबल ने सारी बात बता दी और अपना भेष हटा दिया जिससे सबको पता लग गया की वह तो बीरबल है।

इसके बाद अकबर ने दरबान और मंत्री को जेल में डलवा दिया। बीरबल ने तब रामदेव गायक को दरबार में पेश किया। सभी लोग बीरबल की बुद्धिमता की चर्चा करने लगे।

After this Akbar put the concierge and the minister in jail. Birbal then introduced the Ramdev singer to the court. Everyone started talking about Birbal’s intelligence.
