बेंजामिन फ्रैंकलिन बहुमुखी प्रतिभा के धनी थे। अमेरिका के संस्थापक सदस्यों में से एक बेंजामिन लेखक, मुद्रक, व्यंग्यकार, राजनीतिक विचारक, राजनीतिज्ञ, वैज्ञानिक, आविष्कारक, राजमर्मज्ञ, सैनिक, और राजनयिक थे।

उन्होंने बिजली की छड़, बाईफोकल्स, फ्रैंकलिन स्टोव, एक गाड़ी के ओडोमीटर और ग्लास ‘आर्मोनिका’ का आविष्कार किया था। उन दिनों वह एक अखबार के संपादक, मुद्रक हुआ करते थे। इसके बाद उन्‍होंने फिलाडेल्फिया में व्यापार भी किया।

फ्रेंकलिन की विज्ञान और प्रौद्योगिकी के क्षेत्र में दिलचस्पी थी और अपने प्रसिद्ध प्रयोगों के लिए उन्होंने अंतर्राष्ट्रीय ख्याति प्राप्त की।

जीवन के आखिरी दिनों में बेंजामिन दासप्रथा-विरोधी भी रहे। वह अपने विचारों के कारण ही इतनी ऊंचाई तक पहुंच सके।

– या तो कुछ ऐसा लिखो जो पढ़ने योग्य हो या फिर कुछ ऐसा जो लिखने योग्य हो।

– छोटे खर्चों से सावधान, क्योंकि एक छोटा सा रिसाव एक बड़े जहाज को डुबा देता है।

-बुद्धिमान व्यक्तियों को सलाह की आवश्यकता नहीं होती है। मूर्ख लोग इसे स्वीकार नहीं करते हैं।

– ऐसे लोग जो थोड़ी सी अस्थायी सुरक्षा खरीदने के लिए अपनी स्वतंत्रता का बलिदान कर देते हैं। वे न तो स्वतंत्रता के लायक है और न ही सुरक्षा के लायक।
