किसी धनी व्यक्ति के घर एक संत भिक्षा लेने के लिए गए। उस व्यक्ति के यहां एक तोता था वो पिंजरे में कैद था। तोता संत को देखकर बहुत खुश हुआ।भिक्षा लेने के बाद जब संत जाने लगे तो तोते ने कहा, ‘हे महात्मा! में इस पिंजरे में काफी दिनों से बंद हूं। जब में अपने साथियों को उड़ते हुए देखता हूं तो मुझे दुःख होता है कृपया आप कुछ उपाय बताए कि में यहां से मुक्त हो सकूं।’

वो संत भिक्षा के बाद अपने गुरु के पास पहुंचे और उन्होंने तोते की आप-बीती सुनाई। तोते द्वारा पूछा गया प्रश्न सुनकर गुरुजी बेहोश हो गए। सभी शिष्य घबरा गए। संत ने फिर से प्रश्न पूछना उचित नहीं समझा।

दूसरे दिन संत के आने की राह तोता देखता रहा। जब संत पहुंचे तो उन्होंने गुरु जी को प्रश्न सुनाने वाली घटना का जिक्र उस तोते से किया। वह तोता बोला, ‘आपके गुरुजी ने मेरे प्रश्न का उत्तर आपको दिया हो या नहीं लेकिन उन्होंने मुझे मेरे प्रश्न का उत्तर दे दिया है।’

अगले दिन तोते ने गुरु के संकेत का प्रयोग किया। वह पिंजरे में बेहोश होकर गिर पड़ा। यह देख धनी व्यक्ति ने उसे मरा जानकर पिंजरा खोला। तोता मौका मिलते ही उड़ गया।
