लालच में भक्ति नहीं

महिला संत राबिया अरब में बसरा शहर की एक झोंपड़ी में रहकर हर क्षण भगवान् की याद में खोई रहती थीं। वे कहा करती थीं कि प्रत्येक मनुष्य का जीवन क्षणभंगुर है तथा ईश्वर शाश्वत है ।

बसरा के लोगों ने एक दिन देखा कि राबिया एक हाथ में आग और दूसरे हाथ में पानी से भरी बाल्टी लिए दौड़ रही हैं। एक व्यक्ति ने उनके पास जाकर पूछा, ‘आप इस तरह बेहाल होकर कहाँ जा रही हैं?’

राबिया ने कहा, ‘मैं स्वर्ग में आग लगाने और नरक की आग बुझाने जा रही हूँ। मुझे यह देखकर दुःख होता है कि ईश्वर की भक्ति लोग स्वर्ग जाने के लालच में तथा नरक के भय से बचने के लिए करते हैं। भक्ति बिना किसी लालच और भय से की जानी चाहिए।’

राबिया उपदेश में आगे कहती हैं, ‘हमें अपनी तमाम इंद्रियों का संयम के साथ सदुपयोग करना चाहिए। ईश्वर की उपासना और दोनों हाथों से बीमारों, असहायों की सेवा करते रहना चाहिए।

केवल आदमी की ही नहीं, मूक पशु-पक्षियों तक की सेवा और दुःखियों के प्रति करुणा भावना से ईश्वर बहुत प्रसन्न होते हैं। बिना किसी लालच के जो व्यक्ति जरूरतमंदों की सेवा-सहायता करता है, उसे वैसी शांति मिलती है, जैसी बड़े-बड़े धनिकों को भी नहीं मिल सकती।

एक बार उनसे मिलने आए एक धनाढ्य ने अपनी दानशीलता की शेखी बघारनी शुरू कर दी। राबिया ने उससे पूछा, ‘क्या तुम्हारे अंदर, एक भी अवगुण नहीं है? जिस प्रकार तुम अपने दुष्कर्मों को छिपाते हो, उसी प्रकार सद्कर्मों का ढिंढोरा पीटना छोड़ दो।’

English Translation

The female saint Rabia lived in a hut in the city of Basra in Arabia and was lost in the remembrance of God every moment. She used to say that the life of every human being is fleeting and that God is eternal.

One day the people of Basra saw Rabia running with fire in one hand and a bucket full of water in the other. A person went up to him and asked, ‘Where are you going in such distress?’

Rabia said, ‘I am going to set fire to heaven and extinguish the fire of hell. I am sad to see that people do devotion to God in the greed of going to heaven and to avoid the fear of hell. Bhakti should be done without any greed and fear.

Rabia further says in the sermon, ‘We should make good use of all our senses with restraint. One should keep on worshiping God and serving the sick and helpless with both hands.

God is very pleased with the service of not only man, but even silent animals and birds and compassion towards the afflicted. The person who serves and helps the needy without any greed, he gets such peace, which even the richest cannot get.

Once a rich man who came to meet him started boasting of his charity. Rabia asked him, ‘Don’t you have a single demerit in you? Just as you hide your misdeeds, stop boasting about your good deeds.
