एक बार एक नवाब की राजधानी में एक फकीर आया। फकीर की कीर्ति सुनकर पूरे नवाबी ठाठ के साथ भेंट के थाल लिए हुए वह फकीर के पास पहुंचा। तब फकीर कुछ लोगों से बातचीत कर रहे थे। उन्होंने नवाब को बैठने का निर्देश दिया। जब नवाब का नंबर आया तो फकीर ने नवाब की ओर बढ़ा दिया।

भेंट के हीरे-जवाहरातों को भरे थालों को फकीर ने छुआ तक नहीं, हां बदले में एक सूखी रोटी नवाब को दी, कहां इसे खा लो। रोटी सख्त थी, नवाब से चबायी नहीं गई। तब फकीर ने कहा जैसे आपकी दी हुई वस्तु मेरे काम की नहीं उसी तरह मेरी दी हुई वस्तु आपके काम की नहीं।

हमें वही लेना चाहिए जो हमारे काम का हो। अपने काम का श्रेय भी नहीं लेना चाहिए। नवाब फकीर की इन बातों को सुनकर काफी प्रभावित हुआ। नवाब जब जाने के लिए हुआ तो फकीर भी दरवाजे तक उसे छोड़ने आया। नवाब ने पूछा, मैं जब आया था तब आपने देखा तक नहीं था, अब छोड़ने आ रहे हैं?

फकीर बोला, बेटा जब तुम आए थे तब तुम्हारे साथ अहंकार था। अब तो चोला तुमने उतार दिया है तुम इंसान बन गए हो। हम इंसानियत का आदर करते हैं। नवाब नतमस्तक हो गया।
