जियो तो ऐसे जियो कि बादशाह भी खैरियत पूछे

फारस देश का बादशाह नौशेरवां न्यायप्रियता के लिए विख्यात था। एक दिन वह अपने मंत्रियों के साथ भ्रमण पर निकला। उसने देखा कि एक बगीचे में एक बुजुर्ग माली अखरोट का पौधा लगा रहा है।

बादशाह, माली के पास गया और पूछा, ‘तुम यहां नौकर हो या यह तुम्हारा बगीचा है? तब उस माली ने कहा कि,’मै यहां नौकरी नहीं करता। यह बगीचा मेरे ही पूर्वजों न लगाया है।’ बादशाह बोले, ‘तो तुम यहां अखरोट के पेड़ क्यों लगा रहे हो।

क्या तुम समझते हो कि इनके फल खाने के लिए तुम जीवित रहोगे? जग जाहिर है कि अखरोट का पेड़ लगाने के बीस वर्ष बाद फलता है।’

बुजुर्ग ने बादशाह को उत्तर दिया मैं अब तक दूसरों के लिए लगाए पेड़ों से बहुत फल खा चुका हूं। इसलिए मुझे भी दूसरों के लिए पेड़ लगाने चाहिए। स्वयं फल खाने की आशा से ही पेड़ लगाना तो स्वार्थपरता है। बादशाह उस बुजुर्ग माली का जबाव सुनकर बेहद प्रसन्न हुआ और उसे दो अशर्फियां बतौर पुरस्कार भेंट की।
