भारत की आजादी के बाद भारतीय सेना के प्रथम चीफ कमांडर(Commander in Chief of Indian Army) को नियुक्त करने के लिए एक महत्वपूर्ण मीटिंग का आयोजित हुई जिसमें प्रधानमंत्री जवाहरलाल नेहरु के अलावा देश के गणमान्य लोग उपस्थित थे|

प्रधानमंत्री जवाहरलाल नेहरु ने कहा – “मुझे लगता है कि हमारे पास अधिक अनुभव नहीं है इसलिए हमें किसी ब्रिटिश अधिकारी को भारतीय सेना का चीफ कमांडर बनाना चाहिए”
