इस दिन शनि देव की पूजा होती है काले तिल काले वस्त्र तेल उर्द सनी को बहुत प्रिय है इसलिए इनके द्वारा शनि की पूजा होती है शनि की दशा को दूर करने के लिए यह व्रत किया जाता है सनी त्रोस्त का पाठ भी विशेष लाभदायक सिद्ध होता है अब हम आपको शनिवार व्रत की कथा कहेंगे एक समय सूर्य चंद्रमा मंगल बुध बृहस्पति शुक्र और शनि राहु और केतु इन ग्रहों में आपस में झगड़ा हो गया कि हम सब में सबसे बड़ा कौन है सब अपने आप को बड़ा कहते थे
जब आपस में कोई निर्णय ना हो सका तो सब के सब आपस में झगड़ते हुए इंद्र के पास गए और कहने लगे आप देवताओं के राजा हैं इसलिए आप हमारा न्याय करके बतलाइए कि हम नवो ग्रहों में सबसे बड़ा कौन है राजा इंद्र उनका प्रशन सुनकर घबरा गए और कहने लगी मुझ में यह सामर्थ नहीं है जो किसी को बड़ा या छोटा बताओ मैं अपने मुख से कुछ नहीं कह सकता हां एक उपाय हो सकता है

इस समय पृथ्वी पर राजा विक्रमादित्य दूसरों के दुखों का निवारण करने वाले हैं इसलिए तुम सब मिलकर उन्हीं के पास जाओ वही तुम्हारे दुखों का निवारण करेंगे यह सुनकर सभी ग्रह देवता चलकर भूलोक में राजा विक्रमादित्य की सभा में जाकर  उपस्थित हुए और अपना प्रशन राजा के सामने रखा राजा उनकी बात सुनकर बड़े चिंता में पड़ गए कि मैं अपने मुख से किसको बड़ा किसको छोटा बताऊं जिसको छोटा बताऊंगा वही क्रोध करेगा परंतु उनका झगड़ा निपटाने के लिए उन्होंने एक उपाय सोचा कि सोना चांदी कांसा पीतल सीसा प्लांगा जस्ता अदरक और लोहा नवो धातुओं के नौ आसन बनवाए सब आसनों को क्रम से जैसे सोना सबसे पहले और लोहा सबसे बाद में बिछाए इसके बाद राजा ने सब ग्रहो से कहा आप की सब अपने – अपने आसनों पर बैठिए जिसका आसन सबसे आगे है वह सबसे बड़े और जिसका आसन सबसे पीछे वह सबसे छोटे जानिए क्योंकि लोहा सबसे पीछे था
वह शनिदेव का आसन था इसलिए शनि देव ने समझ लिया कि राजा ने मुझको छोटा बना दिया इस पर शनिदेव को बड़ा क्रोध आया और कहां राजा तू मेरे पराक्रम को नहीं जानता सूर्य एक राशि पर एक महीना चंद्रमा सवा दो दिन मंगल डेढ़ महीना बृहस्पति 13 महीने बुध और शुक्र 1 महीने परंतु मैं एक राशिफल ढाई अथवा साडे 7 साल तक रहता हूं बड़े-बड़े देवताओं को भी मैंने भीषण दुख दिए हैं राजन सुनो राम जी को साढ़ेसाती आई तो बनवास हो गया और रावण पर आई तो राम और लक्ष्मण ने सेना लेकर लंका पर चढ़ाई कर दी रावण कुल का नाश कर दिया हे राजा अब तुम सावधान रहेना राजा कहने लगा जो कुछ भाग्य में होगा देखा जाएगा
उसके बाद अन्य ग्रह है तो प्रसन्नता के साथ चले गए परन्तु शनिदेव बड़े दूध के साथ वहां से गए कुछ कॉल वितित होने पर जब राजा को साढ़ेसाती की दशा आई तो शनि देव घोड़ों के सौदागर बनकर अनेक सुंदर घोड़ों के सहित राजा की राजधानी में आए जब राजा ने सौदागर की आने की खबर सुनी तो राजा ने अपने अस्वपाल को अच्छे अच्छे घोड़े खरीदने की आज्ञा दी अशवपाल ऐसी अच्छी नस्ल के घोड़े देखकर उनका मूल्य सुनकर चकित हो गया और तुरंत ही राजा को खबर दी राजा उन घोड़े को देखकर एक अच्छा सा घोड़ा चुनकर सवारी के लिए चढ़ा राजा के घोड़े की पीठ पर चढ़ते ही घोड़ा तेज से भागा घोड़ा बहुत दूर तक एक बड़े जंगल में जाकर राजा को छोड़कर अंतर्ध्यान हो गया इसके बाद राजा अकेली जंगल में भटकता फिरता रहा बहुत देर के बाद राजा ने भूख और प्यास से दुखी होकर भटकते भटकते एक ग्वाले को देखा ग्वाले ने राजा को प्यास से व्याकुल देखकर पानी पिलाया राजा की उंगली में एक अंगूठी थी राजा ने अंगूठी निकालकर प्रसंता से ग्वाले को दे दी और शहर की ओर चल दिया राजा शहर में पहुंचकर एक सेठ की दुकान पर जाकर बैठ गया और अपने आप को उज्जैन का रहने वाला तथा अपना नाम विका बताया सेठ ने उसे एक कुलनी मनुष्य समझ जल आदि पिलाया भाग्य वर्ष उस दिन सेठ की दुकान पर विक्री बहुत अधिक हुई तब सेठ उसको
भगवान पुरुष समझकर भोजन कराने के लिए अपने साथ ले गए भोजन करते समय राजा ने आश्चर्य की बात देखी कि खूंटी पर हार लटक रहा है और वह खुद ही उस हार को निकल रही है भोजन के बाद कमरे में आने पर जब सेठ को कमरे में हार ना मिला तब सब ने यही निश्चय किया की सिवाय भी वीका के और कोई इस कमरे में नहीं आया अत अवश्य ही उसी ने हार चोरी किया है परंतु भी का ने कहा हार मैंने नहीं लिया है इस पर पाच सात आदमी इकट्ठे होकर उसको फौजदार के पास लाए फौजदार ने उसको राजा के सामने उपस्थित कर दिया और कहा यह आदमी तो भला प्रतीत होता है चोर मालूम नहीं होता परंतु सेठ का कहना है कि इसके सिवाय और कोई घर में आया नहीं अवश्य ही चोरी इसी ने की है तब राजा ने आज्ञा दी इसके हाथ पैर काट कर चौरंगगिया किया जाए राजा की आज्ञा का तुरंत पालन किया गया और वीका के हाथ पैर काट दिए गए इस प्रकार कुछ काल प्रतीत होने पर एक तेली उसको अपने घर ले गया और कोल्हू पर बिठा दिया बीका उस पर बैठा हुआ
अपनी जवान से बैल हकता रहा शनि की दशा समाप्त हो गई और एक रात वर्षा ऋतु के समय वह मल्हार राग खाने लगा उसका गाना सुनकर उस शहर के राजा की कन्या उस राख पर मोहित हो गई और दासी को खबर लाने को भेजा कि शहर में कौन गा रहा है दासी सारे शहर में फिरती फिरती क्या देखती है
कि तेली के घर चौरंगगिया राग गा रहा है दासी ने महल में आकर राजकुमारी को सब वितान सुना दिया बस उसी छड़ राजकुमारी ने अपने मन में यह प्रण कर लिया चाहे कुछ हो हमें उस चौरंगगिया के साथ विवाह करना है प्रातः काल होते ही जब दासी ने राजकुमारी को जगाना चाहा तो राजकुमारी अनशन व्रत लेकर पड़ी रही
तब दासी ने रानी के पास जाकर राजकुमारी की ना उठने का वृतांत कहा रानी ने तुरंत वहां जाकर राजकुमारी को जगाया और उसके दुख का कारण पूछा तो राजकुमारी ने कहा मा मैंने यह प्रण लिया है की तेली के घर में जो चौरंगगिया है उसी के साथ विवाह करूगी माता ने कहा पगली यह क्या बात कर रही है तेरा किसी देश के राजा के साथ विवाह किया जाएगा राजकुमारी कहने लगी

मां मैं अपने अपना प्राण कभी नहीं तोडूंगी माता ने चिंतित होकर यह बात राजा को बताई तब राजा ने भी आकर समझाया मैं अभी अपने देश देशांतर में अपने दूत भेजकर सुयोग्य रूपवान एवं बड़े से बड़े गुणी राजकुमार के साथ तुम्हारा विवाह करूंगा
ऐसी बात तुमको कभी नहीं सोचनी चाहिए राजकुमारी बोली पिताजी मैं अपने प्राण त्याग दूंगी परंतु किसी दूसरे से विवाह नहीं करूंगी इतना सुनकर राजा ने क्रोध से कहा यदि तेरे भाग में ऐसा लिखा है तो जैसी तेरी इच्छा हो वैसा ही कर राजा ने तेली को बुलाकर कहा तेरे घर में चौरंगगिया है उसके साथ मैं अपनी कन्या का विवाह करना चाहता हूं तेली ने कहा यह कैसे हो सकता है कहां आप हमारे राजा कहां मैं नीच तेली परंतु राजा ने कहा भाग के लिखी को कोई टाल नहीं सकता अपने घर जाकर विवाह की तैयारी करो राजा ने उसी समय तोरण और बंधन बार लगवा कर अपनी राजकुमारी का विवाह चौरंगगिया विक्रमादित्य के साथ कर दिया
रात्रि को जब विक्रमादित्य और राजकुमारी महल में सोए तो आधी रात के समय शनि देव ने विक्रमादित्य को स्वतंत्र दिया राजा कहो मुझको छोटा बुलाकर तुमने कितना दुख उठाया राजा ने क्षमा मांगी शनिदेव ने प्रसन्न होकर विक्रमादित्य को हाथ पैर दिए तब राजा ने कहा महाराज मेरी प्रार्थना स्वीकार करें कि जैसा दुख आपने मुझे दिया है ऐसा और किसी को ना दें शनिदेव ने कहा तुम्हारी यह प्रार्थना स्वीकार है जो मनुष्य मेरी कथा सुनेगा या कहेगा उसको मेरी दशा में कभी किसी प्रकार दुख नहीं होगा और जो नित्य ही मेरा ध्यान करेगा या चीटियों को आटा डालेगा उसको उसके सब मनोरथ पूर्ण होंगे इतना कहकर शनिदेव अपने धाम चले गए
राजकुमारी की आंख खुली और उसने राजा के हाथ पांव देखे तो उसे बड़ा आश्चर्य हुआ उसको देखकर राजा ने अपना समस्त हाल कहा कि मैं उज्जैन का राजा विक्रमादित्य हूं यह बात सुनकर राजकुमारी अत्यंत प्रसन्न हुई प्रातः काल राजकुमारी से उसके सखियों ने पूछा तो उसने अपने सारा वृत्तांत कह सुनाया तब सुनने तब
सब ने प्राशता प्रकट की और कहा कि ईश्वर ने आपकी मनोकामना पूर्ण कर दी जब उस सेठ ने यह सुना तब विक्रमादित्य के पास आया और राजा विक्रमादित्य के पैरों पर गिरकर क्षमा मांगने लगा आप पर मैंने चोरी का झूठा आरोप लगाया अतः आप मुझको जो चाहे दंड दे राजा ने कहा मुझ पर शनि देव का कोप था इसी कारण
यह सब दुख मुझ को प्राप्त हुआ इसमें तुम्हारा कोई दोस्त नहीं है तुम अब अपने घर जाकर अपना कार्य करो सेट बोला मुझे तभी शांति मिलेगी जब आप मेरे घर चल कर विधि पूर्वक भोजन करेंगे राजा ने कहा जैसी आपकी मर्जी हो वैसा ही करें से अपने-अपने घर जाकर अनेक प्रकार अनेक प्रकार के सुंदर भोजन बनवाया और राजा विक्रमादित्य को प्रीतिभोज दिया जिस समय वह भोजन कर रहे थे

एक अत्यंत आश्चर्य की बात सबको दिखाई दी जो खुद पहले हार निकल गई थी वह अब हार उगल रही है जब भोजन समाप्त हो गया तब सेठ ने हाथ जोड़कर बहुत सी मोहिनी राजा को भेंट की और कहा मेरी श्रीकमली नाम की एक कन्या
है उसका पानी ग्रहण करें इसके बाद सेठ ने अपनी कन्या का विवाह राजा के साथ कर दिया और बहुत सा दान दहेज आदि दिया

इस प्रकार कुछ दिनों तक वहां निवास करने के बाद विक्रमादित्य ने शहर के राजा से कहा अब मेरी इच्छा उज्जैन जाने की है फिर कुछ दिन के बाद विदा लेकर राजकुमारी मन भावनी सेट की कन्या श्रीकमली तथा अनेक दास दासी रथ और पालकी सहित विक्रमादित्य उज्जैन के तरफ चले जब शहर के निकट पहुंचे और पूर्व वासियों ने राजा के आने का संभावन सुना तो समस्त उज्जैन की प्रजा अगवानी के लिए आई तब बड़े प्रसन्नता से राजा अपने महल में पधारे सारे शहर में बहुत बड़ा महोत्सव मनाया गया और रात्रि को दीपमाला की गई दूसरे दिन राजा ने शहर में घोषणा कराई शनि देवता सब ग्राहाओ में सर्व परी है मैंने इनको छोटा बताया था

इसलिए मुझ को यह दुख प्राप्त हुआ इस कारण सारे शहर में सदा शनिदेव की पूजा और कथा होने लगी राजा और प्रजा अनेक प्रकार के सुख होने लगे जो कोई शनिदेव की इस कथा को पड़ता या सुनता है
उसके शनिदेव की कारपा से सब दुख दूर हो जाते हैं शनिवार की कथा को व्रत दिन अवश्य पढ़ना चाहिए और उसके बाद शनि देव की आरती करनी चाहिए
