हकीम लुकमान ने एक दिन अपने बेटे को पास बुला कर धूपदान की ओर इशारा किया। इशारे को समझ बेटा धूपदान में से एक मुट्ठी चंदन और फिर लुकमान ने दूसरा इशारा किया। इशारा समझ बेटा दूसरे हाथ में चूल्हे में से कोयला ले आया।

लुकमान ने फिर इशारा किया कि दोनों को फेंक दो। बेटे ने दोनो को फेंक दिया। लुकमान ने बेटे से जानना चाहा कि अब उसके हाथों में क्या है? बेटे ने बताया कि दोनों हाथ खाली हैं। लुकमान ने कहा, ऐसा नहीं है। अपने हाथों को गौर से देखो। बेटे ने अनुभव किया कि जिस हाथ में चंदन का चूरा था, वह अब भी खुशबू बिखेर रहा है और जिस हाथ में कोयला रखा था, उसमें अब भी कालिख नजर आ रही थी।

लुकमान ने कहा, बेटा, चंदन का चूरा अब भी तुम्हारे हाथ में खुशबू दे रहा है, जबकि तुम्हारे हाथ में अब चंदन नहीं है। कोयले का टुकड़ा तुमने हाथ में लिया तो तुम्हारा हाथ काला हो गया और उसे फेंक देने के बाद भी हाथ काला है।

इसी तरह दुनिया में कुछ लोग चंदन की तरह होते हैं, जिनके साथ जब तक रहो तब तक हमारा जीवन महकता रहता है और उनका साथ छूट जाने पर भी वह महक हमारे जीवन से जुड़ी रहती है। दूसरे ऐसे होते हैं जिनके साथ रहने से भी और साथ छूटने पर भी जीवन कोयले की तरह काला हो जाता है।
