एक दिन कन्फ्यूशियस के पास सम्राट ने आकर कहा, ‘राज्य में बेईमानी बढ़ती जा रही है, जहां देखो वहां छल-कपट और धोखेबाजी के दर्शन किए जा सकते हैं। क्या राज्य में ऐसा कोई आदमी होगा, जो सदाचारी और गुणों के देवता की कृपा रखता हो।’

कन्फ्यूशियस ने जबाव दिया, ‘ऐसा व्यक्ति है। एक तो स्वयं आप क्योंकि सत्य को जानने की जिज्ञासा रखने वाले व्यक्ति को में महान मानता हूं। लेकिन कन्फ्यूशियस की बातों में न आते हुए सम्राट ने कहा कि मैं महान हो सकता हूं। लेकिन मैं एक अन्य व्यक्ति को देखना चाहूंगा।’

कन्फ्यूशियस बोले, ‘तब तो वह व्यक्ति मैं हूं।’ सम्राट ने कहा, ‘मैं आपसे भी महान आदमी को देखना चाहता हूं। कृप्या मुझे उसके पास ले चलिए।’ कन्फ्यूशियस ने एक क्षण के लिए सम्राट की ओर देखकर कहा, ‘सम्राट हमें उठकर कहीं जाने की जरूरत नहीं। हमें अपने आसपास कई ऐसे व्यक्ति देखने को मिलेंगे। हमें केवल उनकी ओर उस दृष्टि से देखना होगा।’

कन्फ्यूशियस ने सामने की इशारा करते हुए कहा, ‘देखिए सम्राट उस सौ साल की महिला को जो कुदाल से कुंआ खोद रही है।’ सम्राट ने कहा, ‘लेकिन उसे कुंआ खोदने की क्या जरूरत।’ कन्फ्यूशियस बोले, आपने ठीक कहा मगर जरूरत ही सब कुछ नहीं हुआ करती। जो दूसरों के लिए इस तरह निर्लिप्त होकर अपना जीवन बलिदान करते हैं, वही वास्तव में महान हैं। वह इस धरती पर ईश्वर हैं।
