एक राजा था। उसे पक्षी पालने का बड़ा शौक था। उसने एक सुंदर चकोर पक्षी को पाला। एक बार की बात है, राजा वन में शिकार के लिए गया। वहां राजा रास्ता भटक गया। उसे बहुत प्यास लगी। राजा को दूर चट्टान से पानी रिसता दिखाई दिया।

राजा ने उस रिसते हुए पानी के नीचे एक प्याला रख दिया। चकोर पक्षी भी राजा के साथ था। जब प्याला पानी से भरने वाला था, चकोर पक्षी ने अपने पंखों से उस प्याले को गिरा दिया। राजा को गुस्सा आया लेकिन उसने कुछ नहीं कहा।

राजा ने फिर से प्याले को चट्टान से रिसते पानी के नीचे रखा। इस बार भी जब पहले बार की तरह प्याला भरने वाला था। चकोर पक्षी ने पंख से प्याला गिरा दिया। राजा ने उस सुंदर चकोर पक्षी को पकड़कर गुस्से में उसकी गरदन मरोड़ दी। चकोर स्वर्ग चला गया। राजा प्यासा था। राजा ने इस बार थोड़ी ऊंचाई पर प्याला पानी भरने के लिए रखने वाली ही था कि…

राजा ने देखा एक मरा हुआ सांप चट्टान पर पड़ा है। जहरीले सांप के मुंह से रिसता पानी नीचे आ रहा था जिससे वह अपने प्याला भर रहा था। सुंदर चकोर पक्षी को यह बात मालूम थी इसलिए उसने राजा को वह पानी नहीं पीने दिया। राजा को अपने किए पर बहुत पछताबा हुआ।
