एक बार ऋर्षि पिप्पलाद के पास कुछ शिष्य आए और उनसे कहा कि – ‘हे गुरुदेव हमें जीवन और मृत्यु का रहस्य समझाने की कृपा करें।’

तब ऋर्षि ने कहा कि, ‘जीवन के विषय में मैं थोड़ा बहुत बता सकता हूं, क्योंकि मैंने जीवन जिया है, जहां तक मृत्यु के विषय में बात की जाए तो मैं अभी मरा नहीं हूं।’

ऋर्षि ने गंभीरता से कहा कि ऐसे में यह मृत्यु के बारे में कैसे बता सकता हूं। जो मर चुका है उससे यह सवाल किया जाए तो वह इसे काफी अच्छे से इस बारे में बता पाएगा।

कुछ देर बाद चुप रहने के बाद के बाद ऋर्षि पिप्लाद ने कहा कि दूसरा विकल्प यह है कि खुद मर कर देखो। हालांकि तब दूसरे तुम्हारे अनुभव को नहीं जान पाएंगे। इसलिए मृत्यु के रहस्य से इसलिए अब तक पर्दा नहीं उठा है। जो जान लेता है वह यह बताने के लिए जिंदा नहीं रहता है।
