बात उस समय की है जब नेपोलियन सेना के साथ युद्ध में लड़ रहा था। उन दिनों संदेश घुड़सवारों के जरिए भेजे जाते थे। नेपोलियन अपने केम्प में अपने मंत्रियों से चर्चा कर रहा था, तभी एक सन्देश वाहक बड़ी तेज़ी से आया, जैसे ही वह कैंप पर पहुंचा उसका घोडा थकान, भूख, और प्यास से मर गया क्योंकि वह रास्ते में कहीं भी आराम के लिए नहीं रुका था।

नेपोलियन ने उसका लाया हुआ सन्देश पढ़ कर तुरंत उसका जवाब लिखकर दे दिया, क्योंकि सन्देश को सेना तक जल्दी से जल्दी पहुंचाना बहुत जरूरी था, इसलिए नेपोलियन ने घुड़सवार को तुरंत रवाना होने को कहा।

जब उस सन्देश वाहक सैनिक ने बताया कि उसका घोडा मर गया है तो नेपोलियन ने तुरंत कहा कि कोई बात नहीं तुम मेरा खास घोड़ा ले जाओ। यह सुनकर सैनिक हैरान हो गया, क्यों कि वह घोडा बहुत खास था। उसके कई किस्से प्रचलित थे। सैनिक ने कहा, ‘मैं छोटा सैनिक आपके घोड़े पर कैसे बैठ सकता हूं?’

यह सुनकर नेपोलियन ने कहा, एक छोटा आदमी भी दुनिया में ऊंची से ऊंची चीज हासिल कर सकता है । मैं भी कभी तुम्हारी ही तरह एक सामान्य सैनिक ही था।

यह सुनने के बाद भी सैनिक का डर ख़त्म नहीं हुआ। नेपोलियन ने कहा, देखो! सामान्य घोड़ा धीरे भागेगा और तुम देर से युद्ध स्थल पहुंचोगे, हो सकता है इसकी वजह से हम हार जाएं, फिर न यह घोड़ा खास रहेगा और न मेरी सम्राट की पदवी! जीवन में हर किसी का एक विशेष महत्त्व होता है, एक खास भूमिका निभाने के लिए हमें बनाया गया है जिसे हमें पूरा करना है! तुम इसी घोड़े को लेकर तुरंत रवाना हो जाओ।
