दिनेश और निकिता अपनी शादीशुदा जिंदगी में बड़े खुश थे । दिनेश रणजी ट्रॉफी में तमिलनाडु टीम की कप्तानी भी कर रहे थे । उनके खास दोस्त थे तमिलनाडु की टीम के ओपनर ,जो बाद में भारतीय टीम का हिस्सा भी बने , मुरली विजय ।

तो एक दिन निकिता की मुलाकात दिनेश कार्तिक के इसी साथी खिलाड़ी मुरली विजय से हुई । मुरली विजय को निकिता भा गयी। भोले भाले दिनेश कार्तिक इस बात को महसूस नहीं कर पाए। निकिता और मुरली के बीच नजदीकियां बढ़ने लगी और कुछ ही समय में दोनों का अफेयर शुरू हो गया । दोनों खुलकर मिलने लगे। दिनेश कार्तिक के अलावा पूरी तमिलनाडु की टीम जानती थी की मुरली विजय अपने कप्तान दिनेश की पत्नी निकिता के साथ इश्क लड़ा रहे हैं ।

साल 2004 । दिनेश कार्तिक नामक युवा विकेटकीपर ने भारतीय क्रिकेट टीम ने अपना डेब्यू किया । उनका क्रिकेट जीवन परवान चढ़ रहा था और सन 2007 में अपनी बचपन की दोस्त निकिता वंजारा से शादी कर ली।

फिर आया वर्ष 2012 । निकिता प्रेगनेंट हो गई । लेकिन तभी उसने धमाका करते हुए का यह बच्चा मुरली विजय का है । दिनेश कार्तिक टूट गए । उन्होंने निकिता से तलाक ले लिया । तलाक के अगले ही दिन निकिता ने मुरली विजय से शादी कर ली । और महज 3 महीने बाद उन्हें बच्चा हो गया।

दिनेश कार्तिक डिप्रेशन में चले गए। वह मानसिक तौर पर बीमार रहने लगे । वह अपनी पत्नी और दोस्त मुरली के इस धोखे को असानी से भूला नहीं पा रहे थे। वे शराबी हो गए। सुबह से लेकर शाम तक शराब पीने लगे। वे देवदास बन गए। उन्हें भारतीय टीम से बाहर कर दिया गया । रणजी ट्रॉफी में भी वे असफल हो रहे थे ।

तमिलनाडु की टीम की कप्तानी उनसे छीन ली गयी। और मुरली विजय को नया कप्तान बना दिया गया।असफलता का दौर यहीं नहीं थमा , उन्हें आईपीएल में भी टीम में नहीं खिलाया गया। उन्होंने जिम जाना भी छोड़ दिया । अंत में दिनेश इतना हताश हो गए कि आत्महत्या कर लेने तक की बात करने लगे।

तभी एक दिन जिम में उनके ट्रेनर उनके घर पहुंचे । उन्होंने दिनेश कार्तिक को बुरी अवस्था में पाया । उन्होंने कार्तिक को पकड़ा और सीधा जिम लेकर आ गए।कार्तिक ने मना किया लेकिन उनके ट्रेनर ने उनकी एक न सुनी ।

उसी जिम में भारतीय स्क्वैश की महिला चैंपियन दीपिका पल्लीकल भी आती थी । जब उन्होंने दिनेश कार्तिक की स्थिति देखी तो ट्रेनर के साथ उन्होंने भी दिनेश कार्तिक की काउंसलिंग शुरू कर दी ।

ट्रेनर और दीपिका के मेहनत रंग लाने लगी। अब दिनेश कार्तिक सुधार की राह पर थे । उधर दूसरी ओर मुरली विजय का खेल निरंतर डाउन होता जा रहा था । इधर मुरली विजय को भारतीय टीम से बाहर कर दिया गया। बाद में उनकी खराब फॉर्म को देखते हुए आईपीएल में चेन्नई सुपर किंग्स ने भी उन्हें बाहर का रास्ता दिखा दिया।

दूसरी ओर दीपिका पल्लीकल के सहयोग से दिनेश कार्तिक नेट पर जोरदार अभ्यास करने लगे थे। इसका असर दिखने लगा और दिनेश कार्तिक घरेलू क्रिकेट में बड़े स्कोर बनाने लगे । शीघ्र ही उन्हें आईपीएल में भी चुन लिया गया और कोलकाता नाइट राइडर्स का कप्तान भी बना दिया गया । दीपिका पल्लीकल के वह बहुत नजदीक आ चुके थे । उन्होंने दीपिका से शादी कर ली ।

क्रिकेट की उम्र अनुसार दिनेश अब बूढ़ा चुके थे ।भारतीय क्रिकेट टीम में अब ऋषभ पंत का आगमन हो चुका था कार्तिक समझ गए कि अब उनका कैरियर समाप्त प्राय है । उन्होंने क्रिकेट से रिटायर होने का फैसला किया । इधर उनकी पत्नी दीपिका पल्लीकल प्रेग्नेंट हुई और उसने जुड़वा बच्चों को जन्म दिया । दीपिका का स्क्वाश खेलना भी रुक गया ।

दीपिका और दिनेश कार्तिक की इच्छा थी कि उनका चेन्नई के संभ्रांत इलाके पोएस गार्डन एक बंगला हो । 2021 में चेन्नई के इसी इलाके में एक महलनुमा घर को खरीदने का ऑफर उनके पास आया । दिनेश ने उसे खरीदने का फैसला कर लिया । सब आश्चर्य कर रहे थे कि जब दीपिका और दिनेश दोनों ही करीब करीब खेल की दुनिया से बाहर हो चुके हैं , तब इतना महंगा सौदा वे कैसे पूरा करेंगे ?

तभी दिनेश को सूचना मिली की चेन्नई सुपर किंग्स की ओर से महेंद्र सिंह धोनी उन्हें विकेटकीपर के रूप में वापस टीम में देखना चाह रहे हैं । 2022 का आईपीएल का ऑक्शन शुरू हुआ । लेकिन इस बार चेन्नई की जगह रॉयल चैलेंजर बेंगलुरु ने उन्हें खरीद लिया । दिनेश की पत्नी दीपिका ने भी खेलना शुरू किया और अपनी जुड़वा बच्चों के जन्म के महज 6 महीने बाद उन्होंने स्क्वैश की वर्ल्ड चैंपियनशिप में , ग्लास्गो शहर में , मिक्स्ड डबल के साथ महिला युगल का खिताब जीत लिया । उनकी पार्टनर थी जोशना पुनप्पा।
