एक व्यक्ति का मौत नजदीक आ रही थी, लेकिन वह उस समय रेगिस्तानी रास्ते से कहीं जा रहा था, उस समय उसके पास यमदूत आया। यमदूत को वो पहचान न सका लेकिन वह अच्छा आदमी था, इसलिए उसने यमदूत को पानी पिलाया और कुशलक्षेम पूछी।

इसके बाद उस व्यक्ति ने पूछा, ‘तुम कौन हो और मेरे पास क्यों आए हो? यमदूत बोला, ‘मैं यमदूत हूं और मृत्युलोक से तुम्हारे प्राण लेने आया हूं। यमदूत ने कहा, ‘तुमने मुझे पानी पिलाया। मुझे तुम अच्छे आदमी लगे, इसलिए मैं तुम्हें यह ‘भाग्य की पुस्तक’ देता हूं।

तुम इसे खोलकर अपना भाग्य बदल सकते हो। लेकिन याद रखना, तुम्हें केवल पांच मिनट का ही समय मिलेगा। यमदूत ने उसे वह पुस्तक दे दी। उस व्यक्ति ने पुस्तक पलटी तो सबसे पहले उसके पड़ोसी का पन्ना खुल गया।

उसे अपने पड़ोसी का जीवन दिखाई दिया। उनका खुशहाल जीवन देखकर वह ईर्ष्या से भर गया। उसने तुरंत अपनी कलम निकाली और उनके भाग्य को जितना बिगाड़ सकता था, उसने बिगाड़ दिया। इसी तरह उसने अपने अन्य पड़ोसियों के पन्नों में किया।

अंत में वह अपने जीवन के पन्ने तक पहुंचा। उसमें उसे अपनी मौत अगले ही पल आती दिखी। इससे पहले कि वह अपने जीवन में कोई फेरबदल कर पाता, मौत ने उसे अपने आगोश में ले लिया। क्योंकि उसे देवदूत से मिले पांच मिनट पूरे हो चुके थे।
