कौन है श्रैष्ठ?

सम्राट चंद्रगुप्त ने एक बार चाणक्य से कहा, चाणक्य काश! तुम खूबसूरत होते? चाणक्य ने कहा, ‘राजन्! इंसान के पहचान उसके गुणों से होती है, रूप से नहीं।’ तब चंद्रगुप्त ने पूछा, ‘क्या कोई ऐसा उदाहरण दे सकते हो जहां गुण के सामने रूप छोटा रह गया हो।’

तब चाणक्य ने राजा को दो गिलास पानी पीने को दिया। फिर चाणक्य ने कहा, ‘पहले गिलास का पानी सोने के घड़े का था और दूसरे गिलास का पानी मिट्टी के घड़े का। आपको कौन सा अच्छा लगा।’ चंद्रगुप्त बोले, ‘मटकी से भरे गिलास का।’

नजदीक ही सम्राट चंद्रगुप्त की पत्नी मौजूद थीं। वह इस उदाहरण से काफी प्रभावित हुए। उन्होंने कहा, ‘वो सोने का घड़ा किस काम का जो प्यास न बुझा सके। मटकी भले ही कितनी कुरुप हो, लेकिन प्यास मटकी के पानी से ही बुझती है। यानी रूप नहीं गुण महान होता है।’

इंसान का रूप नहीं बल्कि उसके गुणों के कारण पूजा जाता है। रूप तो आज है कल नहीं लेकिन गुण जब तक जीवन है तब तक जिंदा रहते हैं। और मरने के बाद भी जीवंत रहते हैं।
