चाणक्य और यूनान का राजदूत

पाटलिपुत्र के मंत्री आचार्य चाणक्य बहुत ही विद्वान और न्यायप्रिय व्यक्ति थे। वह एक सीधे आैर ईमानदार व्यकि् भी थे। वे इतने बडे साम्राज्य के महामंत्री होने के बावजूद छप्पर से ढकी कुटिया में रहते थे।

एक आम आदमी की तरह उनका रहन-सहन था। एक बार यूनान का राजदूत उनसे मिलने राजदरबार पहुंचा। राजनीति और कूटनीति में दक्ष चाणक्य की चर्चा सुनकर राजदूत मंत्रमुग्ध हो गया। राजदूत ने शाम को चाणक्य से मिलने का समय मांगा।

आचार्य ने कहा-‘आप रात को मेरे घर आ सकते हैं।’ राजदूत चाणक्य के व्यवहार से प्रसन्न हुआ। शाम को जब वह राजमहल परिसर में आमात्य निवास के बारे में पूछने लगा। तब राज प्रहरी ने बताया कि ‘आचार्य चाणक्य तो नगर के बाहर रहते हैं।’

राजदूत ने सोचा शायद महामंत्री का नगर के बाहर सरोवर पर बना सुंदर महल होगा। राजदूत नगर के बाहर पहुंचा। एक नागरिक से पूछा कि चाणक्य कहां रहते हैं। एक कुटिया की ओर इशारा करते हुए नागरिक ने कहा-देखिए, वह सामने महामंत्री की कुटिया है।

राजदूत आश्चर्य चकित रह गया। उसने कुटिया में पहुंचकर चाणक्य के पांव छुए और शिकायत की-आप जैसा चतुर महामंत्री एक कुटिया में रहता है। चाणक्य ने कहा-अगर में जनता की कडी मेहनत और पसीने की कमाई से बने महलों से रहूंगा तो मेरे देश के नागरिक को कुटिया भी नसीब नहीं होगी। चाणक्य की ईमानदारी पर यूनान का राजदूत नतमस्तक हो गया।

Pataliputra’s minister Acharya Chanakya was a very wise and just man. He was also a straight and honest person. Despite being the Chief Minister of such a great empire, he lived in a roof covered cot.

Like a common man, he was living his life. Once the ambassador of Greece reached the court to meet him. Ambassador became enthralled by the discussion of Chanakya, full of politics and diplomacy. The ambassador sought time to meet Chanakya in the evening.

Acharya said, ‘You can come to my house at night.’ The ambassador was pleased with Chanakya’s behavior. In the evening, when he started asking about the Amatya residence in the Rajmahal premises. Then Raj Senti told that ‘Acharya Chanakya resides outside the city.’

The ambassador thought that the Mahanadi would have a beautiful palace built on the lake outside the city. Ambassador reached outside the city. Asked a citizen where Chanakya resides. Pointing towards a cottage, the citizen said- see, he is the cottage of the General Secretary.

Ambassador was amazed at the surprise. He touched the feet of Chanakya by reaching the cottage and complained- a smart general secretary like you lives in a cottage. Chanakya said, “If I live with hard work and hard work built palaces, then the citizens of my country will not be able to get rid of the cottage.” On the honesty of Chanakya, the ambassador of Greece became a worshiper.
