मान्यता के अनुसार, धनतेरस के दिन समुद्र मंथन से भगवान धन्वंतरि प्रकट हुए थे। इसलिए इस दिन भगवान धन्वंतरि की विशेष पूजा की जाती है। समुद्र मंथन से धन्वतंरि के साथ अन्य रत्न भी निकले थे। आज हम आपको समुद्र मंथन की पूरी कथा व उसमें छिपे जीवन पद्वति के सूत्रों के बारे में बता रहे हैं-

ये है समुद्र मंथन की कथा
धर्म ग्रंथों के अनुसार, एक बार महर्षि दुर्वासा के श्राप के कारण स्वर्ग श्रीहीन (ऐश्वर्य, धन, वैभव आदि) हो गया। तब सभी देवता भगवान विष्णु के पास गए। भगवान विष्णु ने उन्हें असुरों के साथ मिलकर समुद्र मंथन करने का उपाय बताया और ये भी बताया कि समुद्र मंथन को अमृत निकलेगा, जिसे ग्रहण कर तुम अमर हो जाओगे। यह बात जब देवताओं ने असुरों के राजा बलि को बताई तो वे भी समुद्र मंथन के लिए तैयार हो गए। वासुकि नाग की नेती बनाई गई और मंदराचल पर्वत की सहायता से समुद्र को मथा गया। समुद्र मंथन से उच्चैश्रवा घोड़ा, ऐरावत हाथी, लक्ष्मी, भगवान धन्वंतरि सहित 14 रत्न निकले।

समुद्र मंथन को अगर जीवन पद्धति के नजरिए से देखा जाए तो हम पाएंगे कि सीधे-सीधे किसी को अमृत (परमात्मा) नहीं मिलता। उसके लिए पहले मन को विकारों को दूर करना पड़ता है और अपनी इंद्रियों पर नियंत्रण करना पड़ता है।
समुद्र मंथन में 14 नंबर पर अमृत निकला था। इस 14 अंक का अर्थ है ये है 5 कमेन्द्रियां, 5 जनेन्द्रियां तथा अन्य 4 हैं- मन, बुद्धि, चित्त और अहंकार। इन सभी पर नियंत्रण करने के बाद में परमात्मा प्राप्त होते हैं।

1. कालकूट विष समुद्र मंथन में से सबसे पहले कालकूट विष निकला, जिसे भगवान शिव ने ग्रहण कर लिया। इससे तात्पर्य है कि अमृत (परमात्मा) इस इंसान के मन में स्थित है। अगर हमें अमृत की इच्छा है तो सबसे पहले हमें अपने मन को मथना पड़ेगा। जब हम अपने मन को मथेंगे तो सबसे पहले बुरे विचार ही बाहर निकलेंगे। यही बुरे विचार विष है। हमें इन बुरे विचारों को परमात्मा को समर्पित कर देना चाहिए और इनसे मुक्त हो जाना चाहिए।

2. कामधेनु समुद्र मंथन में दूसरे क्रम में निकली कामधेनु। वह अग्निहोत्र (यज्ञ) की सामग्री उत्पन्न करने वाली थी। इसलिए ब्रह्मवादी ऋषियों ने उसे ग्रहण कर लिया। कामधेनु प्रतीक है मन की निर्मलता की। क्योंकि विष निकल जाने के बाद मन निर्मल हो जाता है। ऐसी स्थिति में ईश्वर तक पहुंचना और भी आसान हो जाता है।

3. उच्चैश्रवा घोड़ा समुद्र मंथन के दौरान तीसरे नंबर पर उच्चैश्रवा घोड़ा निकला। इसका रंग सफेद था। इसे असुरों के राजा बलि ने अपने पास रख लिया। लाइफ मैनेजमेंट की दृष्टि से देखें तो उच्चैश्रवा घोड़ा मन की गति का प्रतीक है। मन की गति ही सबसे अधिक मानी गई है। यदि आपको अमृत (परमात्मा) चाहिए तो अपने मन की गति पर विराम लगाना होगा। तभी परमात्मा से मिलन संभव है।

4. ऐरावत हाथी समुद्र मंथन में चौथे नंबर पर ऐरावत हाथी निकला, उसके चार बड़े-बड़े दांत थे। उनकी चमक कैलाश पर्वत से भी अधिक थी। ऐरावत हाथी को देवराज इंद्र ने रख लिया। ऐरावत हाथी प्रतीक है बुद्धि का और उसके चार दांत लोभ, मोह, वासना और क्रोध का। चमकदार (शुद्ध व निर्मल) बुद्धि से ही हमें इन विकारों पर काबू रख सकते हैं।

5. कौस्तुभ मणि समुद्र मंथन में पांचवे क्रम पर निकली कौस्तुभ मणि, जिसे भगवान विष्णु ने अपने ह्रदय पर धारण कर लिया। कौस्तुभ मणि प्रतीक है भक्ति का। जब आपके मन से सारे विकार निकल जाएंगे, तब भक्ति ही शेष रह जाएगी। यही भक्ति ही भगवान ग्रहण करेंगे।

6. कल्पवृक्ष समुद्र मंथन में छठे क्रम में निकला इच्छाएं पूरी करने वाला कल्पवृक्ष, इसे देवताओं ने स्वर्ग में स्थापित कर दिया। कल्पवृक्ष प्रतीक है आपकी इच्छाओं का। कल्पवृक्ष से जुड़ा लाइफ मैनेजमेंट सूत्र है कि अगर आप अमृत (परमात्मा) प्राप्ति के लिए प्रयास कर रहे हैं तो अपनी सभी इच्छाओं का त्याग कर दें। मन में इच्छाएं होंगी तो परमात्मा की प्राप्ति संभव नहीं है।

7. रंभा अप्सरा समुद्र मंथन में सातवे क्रम में रंभा नामक अप्सरा निकली। वह सुंदर वस्त्र व आभूषण पहने हुई थीं। उसकी चाल मन को लुभाने वाली थी। ये भी देवताओं के पास चलीं गई। अप्सरा प्रतीक है मन में छिपी वासना का। जब आप किसी विशेष उद्देश्य में लगे होते हैं तब वासना आपका मन विचलित करने का प्रयास करती हैं। उस स्थिति में मन पर नियंत्रण होना बहुत जरूरी है।

8. देवी लक्ष्मी समुद्र मंथन में आठवे स्थान पर निकलीं देवी लक्ष्मी। असुर, देवता, ऋषि आदि सभी चाहते थे कि लक्ष्मी उन्हें मिल जाएं, लेकिन लक्ष्मी ने भगवान विष्णु का वरण कर लिया। लाइफ मैनेजमेंट के नजरिए से लक्ष्मी प्रतीक है धन, वैभव, ऐश्वर्य व अन्य सांसारिक सुखों का। जब हम अमृत (परमात्मा) प्राप्त करना चाहते हैं तो सांसारिक सुख भी हमें अपनी ओर खींचते हैं, लेकिन हमें उस ओर ध्यान न देकर केवल ईश्वर भक्ति में ही ध्यान लगाना चाहिए।

9. वारुणी देवी समुद्र मंथन से नौवे क्रम में निकली वारुणी देवी, भगवान की अनुमति से इसे दैत्यों ने ले लिया। वारुणी का अर्थ है मदिरा यानी नशा। यह भी एक बुराई है। नशा कैसा भी हो शरीर और समाज के लिए बुरा ही होता है। परमात्मा को पाना है तो सबसे पहले नशा छोड़ना होगा तभी परमात्मा से साक्षात्कार संभव है।

10. चंद्रमा समुद्र मंथन में दसवें क्रम में निकले चंद्रमा। चंद्रमा को भगवान शिव ने अपने मस्तक पर धारण कर लिया। चंद्रमा प्रतीक है शीतलता का। जब आपका मन बुरे विचार, लालच, वासना, नशा आदि से मुक्त हो जाएगा, उस समय वह चंद्रमा की तरह शीतल हो जाएगा। परमात्मा को पाने के लिए ऐसा ही मन चाहिए। ऐसे मन वाले भक्त को ही अमृत (परमात्मा) प्राप्त होता है।

11. पारिजात वृक्ष इसके बाद समुद्र मंथन से पारिजात वृक्ष निकला। इस वृक्ष की विशेषता थी कि इसे छूने से थकान मिट जाती थी। यह भी देवताओं के हिस्से में गया। लाइफ मैनेजमेंट की दृष्टि से देखा जाए तो समुद्र मंथन से पारिजात वृक्ष के निकलने का अर्थ सफलता प्राप्त होने से पहले मिलने वाली शांति है। जब आप (अमृत) परमात्मा के इतने निकट पहुंच जाते हैं तो आपकी थकान स्वयं ही दूर हो जाती है और मन में शांति का अहसास होता है।

12. पांचजन्य शंख समुद्र मंथन से बारहवें क्रम में पांचजन्य शंख निकला। इसे भगवान विष्णु ने ले लिया। शंख को विजय का प्रतीक माना गया है साथ ही इसकी ध्वनि भी बहुत ही शुभ मानी गई है। जब आप अमृत (परमात्मा) से एक कदम दूर होते हैं तो मन का खालीपन ईश्वरीय नाद यानी स्वर से भर जाता है। इसी स्थिति में आपको ईश्वर का साक्षात्कार होता है।

13 व 14. भगवान धन्वंतरि व अमृत कलश
समुद्र मंथन से सबसे अंत में भगवान धन्वंतरि अपने हाथों में अमृत कलश लेकर निकले। भगवान धन्वंतरि प्रतीक हैं निरोगी तन व निर्मल मन के।
