घोर घने जंगल में

एक बार विदुर जी संसार भ्रमण करके धृतराष्ट्र के पास पहुँचे तो धृतराष्ट्र ने कहा, “विदुर जी ! सारा संसार घूमकर आये हो आप, कहिये कहाँ-कहाँ पर क्या देखा आपने?”
विदुर जी बोले, “राजन् ! कितने आश्चर्य की बात देखी है मैंने। सारा संसार लोभ शृंखलाओं में फँस गया है। काम, क्रोध, लोभ, भय के कारण उसे कुछ भी दिखाई नहीं देता, पागल हो गया है। आत्मा को वह जान ता ही नहीं।”
तब एक कथा उन्होंने सुनाई। एक वन था बहुत भयानक। उसमें भूला-भटका हुआ एक व्यक्ति जा पहुँचा। मार्ग उसे मिला नहीं। परन्तु उसने देखा कि वन में शेर, चीते, रीछ, हाथी और कितने ही पशु दहाड़ रहे हैं। भय से उसके हाथ-पाँव काँपने लगे। बिना देखे वह भागने लगा। भागता-भागता एक स्थान पर पहुँच गया। वहाँ देखा कि पाँच विषधर साँप फन फैलाये फुङ्कार रहे हैं। उनके पास ही एक वृद्ध स्त्री खड़ी है। महाभयंकर साँप जब इसकी और लपका तो वह फिर भागा और अन्त में हाँफता हुआ एक गढ़ में जा गिरा जो घास और पौधों से ढका पड़ा था।
सौभाग्य से एक बड़े वृक्ष की शाखा उसके हाथ में आ गई। उसको पकड़कर वह लटकने लगा। तभी उसने नीचे देखा कि एक कुआँ है और उसमें एक बहुत बड़ा साँप “एक अजगर” मुख खोले बैठा है। उसे देखकर वह काँप उठा। शाखा को दृढ़ता से पकड़ लिया कि गिरकर अजगर के मुख में न जा पड़े। परन्तु ऊपर देखा तो उससे भी भयंकर दृश्य था। छः मुख वाला एक हाथी वृक्ष को झंझोड़ रहा था और जिस शाखा को उसने पकड़ रखा था, उसे सफेद और काले रंग के चूहे काट रहे थे। भय से उसका रंग पीला पड़ गया, परन्तु तभी शहद की एक बूँद उसके होंठों पर आ गिरी।
उसने ऊपर देखा। वृक्ष के ऊपर वाले भाग में मधु-मक्खियों का एक छत्ता लगा था, उसी से शनैः–शनैः शहद की बूँदें गिरती थीं। इन बूँदों का स्वाद वह लेने लगा। इस बात को भूल गया कि नीचे अजगर है। इस बात को भूल गया कि वृक्ष को एक छः मुख वाला हाथी झंझोड़ रहा है। इस बात को भी भूल गया कि जिस शाखा से वह लटका है उसे सफेद और काले चूहे काट रहे हैं और इस बात को भी कि चारों ओर भयानक वन है जिसमें भयंकर पशु चिंघाड़ रहे हैं।
धृतराष्ट्र ने कथा को सुना तो कहा, “विदुर जी ! यह कौन से वन की बात आप कहते हैं? कौन है वह अभागा व्यक्ति जो इस भयानक वन में पहुँचकर संकट में फँस गया?”
विदुर जी ने कहा―”राजन् ! यह संसार ही वह वन है। मनुष्य ही वह अभागा व्यक्ति है। संसार में पहुँचते ही वह देखता है कि इस वन में रोग, कष्ट और चिन्तारुपी पशु गरज रहे हैं। यहाँ काम, क्रोध, लोभ, मोह और अहंकार के पाँच विषधर साँप फन फैलाये फुंङ्कार रहे हैं।
यहीं वह बूढ़ी स्त्री रहती है जिसे वृद्धावस्था कहते हैं और जो रुप तथा यौवन को समाप्त कर देती है। इनसे डरकर वह भागा। वह शाखा,जिसे जीने की इच्छा कहते हैं, हाथ में आ गई। इस शाखा से लटके-लटके उसने देखा कि नीचे मृत्यु का महासर्प मुँह खोले बैठा है।
वह सर्प, जिससे आज तक कोई भी नहीं बचा, ना राम, न रावण, न कोई राजा न महाराजा, न कोई धनवान् न कोई निर्धन, कोई भी कालरुपी सर्प से आज तक बचा नहीं; और छः मुख वाला हाथी जो इस वृक्ष को झंझोड़ रहा था वह वर्ष है―छः ऋतु वाला। छः ऋतुएँ ही उसके मुख हैं। लगातार वह इस वृक्ष को झंझोड़ता रहता है; और इसके साथ ही काले और श्वेत रंग के चूहे इस शाखा को तीव्रता से काट रहे हैं; ये रात और दिन आयु को प्रतिदिन छोटा कर रहे हैं, यहीं दो चूहे हैं।

English translation

Once Vidur ji came to Dhritarashtra after touring the world, Dhritarashtra said, “Vidur ji! You have come around the world, tell me, what have you seen anywhere?”
Vidur ji said, “Rajan! How surprising I have seen. The whole world is trapped in greed chains. He does not see anything due to work, anger, greed, fear, has gone mad. He knows the soul. Not only. “
Then he narrated a story. One forest was very terrible. A man who was forgotten in it reached him. He did not find the route. But he saw that lions, leopards, bears, elephants and how many animals are roaring in the forest. His hands and feet trembled with fear. He started running without looking. Rushing ran to a place. Saw that there are five poisonous snakes flying around to spread the fun. An old woman is standing near him. When the great snake caught him, he ran again and finally fell into a gasp stronghold which was covered with grass and plants.
Fortunately, a large tree branch came into his hands. He started hanging on to it. Then he saw below that there is a well and a huge snake is sitting in it, “a dragon”. Seeing him, he trembled. Holded the branch firmly so that it could not fall into the face of the dragon. But when I looked up, there was a more terrible scene than that. A six-faced elephant was shaking the tree and white and black mice were biting the branch he had held. Her color turned pale due to fear, but then a drop of honey fell on her lips.
he looked up. There was a hive of honey-bees in the top part of the tree, from which the drops of honey were falling. He started tasting these drops. Forgot that there is a dragon below. Forgot the fact that a six-faced elephant is shaking the tree. He also forgot that the white and black rats are biting the branch from which he hangs, and also that there is a terrible forest around which fierce animals are chirping.
Dhritarashtra heard the story and said, “Vidur ji! Which forest do you say this? Who is that hapless person who got into this terrible forest and got into trouble?”
Vidur ji said, “Rajan! This world is that forest. Man is that unfortunate person. As soon as he reaches the world, he sees that disease, suffering and anxious animals are thundering in this forest. Here work, anger, greed, The five poisonous snakes of infatuation and ego are whispers to spread the fun.
Here resides the old woman who is called old age and who ends the form and puberty. Fearing them, he ran away. The branch, called the will to live, came into hand. Hanging from this branch, he saw that the Mahasarp of death is sitting down.
The snake, from which no one has survived till today, neither Ram, nor Ravana, nor any king nor Maharaja, nor any rich or poor, no one has survived from the serpent to date; And the six-faced elephant that was shaking this tree is the year वाला six seasons. His face is only six seasons. Constantly he keeps hammering this tree; And at the same time black and white mice are cutting this branch intensely; They are reducing the age by day and day by day, here are two rats.
