अहंकार की दुर्गंध

संत तुलसीदासजी ने लिखा है, ‘प्रभुता पाई काहि मद नाहीं’ अर्थात् किसी भी तरह से धन, पद, सत्ता या विद्या पाते ही आदमी के अंदर अभिमान पैदा हो जाता है कि वह सबसे बड़ा है।

जब हम यह समझ लें कि धन-संपत्ति हमें भगवान् की कृपा से प्राप्त हुई है और हम उस संपत्ति के स्वामी नहीं हैं, तभी हम अहंकार से बच सकते हैं एक गृहस्थ व्यक्ति परिश्रम कर दुकान से इतना कमा लेता था कि अपने परिवार का पालन कर सके।

उसके घर का दरवाजा संतों अतिथियों के लिए हमेशा खुला रहता था। एक दिन उसने किसी सौदे में लाखों रुपए कमा लिए। रुपयों के साथ-साथ अभिमान भी उसके हृदय में आ बसा। उसने घर के दरवाजे बंद कर दिए और द्वार पर एक कुत्ता रख लिया, जो आनेवाले पर भौंकता था।

एक संत के प्रति वह अत्यंत आदर भाव रखता था। वह कभी नगर में आते, तो उसके घर पहुँचकर सत्संग-प्रवचन करते। एक वर्ष बाद भ्रमण करते हुए संत नगर में आए।

वे उस गृहस्थ के मकान पर पहुँचे। द्वार की सांकल बजाई, तो अंदर से कुत्ते ने भौंककर उन्हें चौंका दिया। वे वापस लौटकर मंदिर में चले गए।

सेठ को पता चला, तो वह उनके लिए भोजन व फल लेकर मंदिर पहुँचा। उस सेठ ने ज्योंही भोजन की थाली सामने रखी, संत ने कहा, ‘यह भोजन ले जा।

पहले विनम्रता से भोजन कराता था, तो हमें अनूठी सुगंध आती थी, अब अहंकाररुपी दुर्गंध ने इस भोजन को सारहीन बना दिया है। शास्त्रों में लिखा है कि अतिथि के लिए द्वार बंद रखने वाले का भोजन विष समान त्याज्य है।

संत के शब्दों ने सेठ का अहंकार दूर कर दिया। वह पूर्व की भांति विनम्र स्वभाव वाला बन गया।

English Translation

Sant Tulsidasji has written, ‘Prabhuta Pai Kahi Mad Nahi’, that is, as soon as one gets wealth, position, power or knowledge in any way, pride arises in a man that he is the greatest.

When we understand that we have got wealth and property by the grace of God and we are not the owner of that property, only then we can avoid arrogance. Can you

The door of his house was always open for the saintly guests. One day he earned lakhs of rupees in a deal. Along with the money, pride also entered his heart. He closed the doors of the house and put a dog at the door, which barked at anyone who came.

He had great respect for a saint. If he ever came to the city, he would reach his house and give satsang-discourses. After a year while traveling, the saint came to the city.

They reached the house of that householder. When the door bell rang, the dog barked from inside and startled them. They returned and went to the temple.

When Seth came to know, he reached the temple with food and fruits for them. As soon as that Seth put the plate of food in front, the saint said, ‘Take this food.

Earlier, we used to serve food with humility, then we used to get a unique aroma, now the foul smell of ego has made this food immaterial. It is written in the scriptures that the food of the one who keeps the door closed for the guest is like poison.

The words of the saint removed Seth’s ego. He became as humble as before.
