बहुत समय पहले की बात है , चंदनपुर का राजा बड़ा प्रतापी था , दूर–दूर तक उसकी समृद्धि की चर्चाएं होती थी, उसके..
महल में हर एक सुख–सुविधा की वस्तु उपलब्ध थी पर फिर भी अंदर से उसका मन अशांत रहता था। बहुत से विद्वानो से मिला, किसी से कोई हल प्राप्त नहीं हुआ.. उसे शांति नहीं मिली।

एक दिन भेष बदल कर राजा अपने राज्य की सैर पर निकला। घूमते– घूमते वह एक खेत के निकट से गुजरा , तभी उसकी नज़र एक किसान पर पड़ी , किसान ने फटे–पुराने वस्त्र धारण कर रखे थे और वह पेड़ की छाँव में बैठ कर भोजन कर रहा था।

किसान के वस्त्र देख राजा के मन में आया कि वह किसान को कुछ स्वर्ण मुद्राएं दे दे ताकि उसके जीवन मे कुछ खुशियां आ पाये।

राजा किसान के सम्मुख जा कर बोला – मैं एक राहगीर हूँ , मुझे तुम्हारे खेत पर ये चार स्वर्ण मुद्राएँ गिरी मिलीं , चूँकि यह खेत तुम्हारा है इसलिए ये मुद्राएं तुम ही रख लो।

किसान – ना – ना सेठ जी , ये मुद्राएं मेरी नहीं हैं , इसे आप ही रखें या किसी और को दान कर दें , मुझे इनकी कोई आवश्यकता नहीं।
किसान की यह प्रतिक्रिया राजा को बड़ी अजीब लगी , वह बोला , धन की आवश्यकता किसे नहीं होती भला आप लक्ष्मी को ना कैसे कर सकते हैं ?

सेठ जी , मैं रोज चार आने कमा लेता हूँ , और उतने में ही प्रसन्न रहता हूँ… , किसान बोला।
क्या ? आप सिर्फ चार आने की कमाई करते हैं , और उतने में ही प्रसन्न रहते हैं , यह कैसे संभव है ! , राजा ने अचरज से पुछा।

सेठ जी, किसान बोला , प्रसन्नता इस बात पर निर्भर नहीं करती की आप कितना कमाते हैं या आपके पास कितना धन है …. प्रसन्नता उस धन के प्रयोग पर निर्भर करती है।

तो तुम इन चार आने का क्या–क्या कर लेते हो ?, राजा ने उपहास के लहजे में प्रश्न किया।

किसान भी बेकार की बहस में नहीं पड़ना चाहता था उसने आगे बढ़ते हुए उत्तर दिया ,
इन चार आनो में से एक मैं कुएं में डाल देता हूँ , दुसरे से कर्ज चुका देता हूँ , तीसरा उधार में दे देता हूँ और चौथा मिटटी में गाड़ देता हूँ ….
राजा सोचने लगा , उसे यह उत्तर समझ नहीं आया। वह किसान से इसका अर्थ पूछना चाहता था , पर वो जा चुका था।

राजा ने अगले दिन ही सभा बुलाई और पूरे दरबार में कल की घटना कह सुनाई और सबसे किसान के उस कथन का अर्थ पूछने लगा।

दरबारियों ने अपने–अपने तर्क पेश किये पर कोई भी राजा को संतुष्ट नहीं कर पाया , अंत में किसान को ही दरबार में बुलाने का निर्णय लिया गया।

बहुत खोज–बीन के बाद किसान मिला और उसे कल की सभा में प्रस्तुत होने का निर्देश दिया गया।

राजा ने किसान को उस दिन अपने भेष बदल कर भ्रमण करने के बारे में बताया और सम्मान पूर्वक दरबार में बैठाया।

मैं तुम्हारे उत्तर से प्रभावित हूँ , और तुम्हारे चार आने का हिसाब जानना चाहता हूँ; बताओ, तुम अपने कमाए चार आने किस तरह खर्च करते हो जो तुम इतना प्रसन्न और संतुष्ट रह पाते हो ? , राजा ने प्रश्न किया।

किसान बोला , हुजूर , जैसा की मैंने बताया था , मैं एक आना कुएं में डाल देता हूँ , यानि अपने परिवार के भरण–पोषण में लगा देता हूँ, दुसरे से मैं कर्ज चुकता हूँ , यानि इसे मैं अपने वृद्ध माँ–बाप की सेवा में लगा देता हूँ , तीसरा मैं उधार दे देता हूँ , यानि अपने बच्चों की शिक्षा–दीक्षा में लगा देता हूँ, और चौथा मैं मिटटी में गाड़ देता हूँ , यानि मैं एक पैसे की बचत कर लेता हूँ ताकि समय आने पर मुझे किसी से माँगना ना पड़े और मैं इसे धार्मिक ,सामजिक या अन्य आवश्यक कार्यों में लगा सकूँ।

राजा को अब किसान की बात समझ आ चुकी थी। राजा की समस्या का समाधान हो चुका था , वह जान चुका था की यदि उसे प्रसन्न एवं संतुष्ट रहना है तो उसे भी अपने अर्जित किये धन का सही–सही उपयोग करना होगा।
मित्रों, देखा जाए तो पहले की अपेक्षा लोगों की आमदनी बढ़ी है पर क्या उसी अनुपात में हमारी प्रसन्नता भी बढ़ी है ?

पैसों के मामलों में हम कहीं न कहीं गलती कर रहे हैं , लाइफ को बैलेंस्ड बनाना ज़रूरी है और इसके लिए हमें अपनी आमदनी और उसके इस्तेमाल पर ज़रूर गौर करना चाहिए, नहीं तो भले हम लाखों रूपये कमा लें पर फिर भी प्रसन्न एवं संतुष्ट नहीं रह पाएंगे !
