एक बार एक स्त्री महाराष्ट्र के महान संत ज्ञानेश्वर महाराज के पास आई। वह अपने छोटे बच्चे को भी साथ लाई। उस स्त्री ने संत से कहा कि मेरे बेटे को अपच की बीमारी है। मैने इसका इलाज कई दवाईयों और औषधियों से किया पर यह ठीक नहीं हुआ।

संत ज्ञानेश्वर ने कहा कि ‘इसे आप कल लेकर आना। दूसरे दिन जब वह स्त्री लड़के को लेकर संत के पास गई तो, संत ज्ञानेश्वर ने बच्चे से पूछा तुम गुड़ खाते हो, बच्चे ने स्वीकृति में सिर हिलाया। संत ने उस बच्चे से कहा कि तुम गुड खाना बंद कर दो, तुम्हारी बीमारी ठीक हो जाएगी।’

स्त्री यह सब बात सुन रही थी। उसने संत ज्ञानेश्वर से पूछा कि ‘महाराज आप यह बात कल भी बता सकते थे। लेकिन आपने यह बात कहने के लिए हमें आज ही क्यों बुलाया’, तब संत ज्ञानेश्वर बोले कि बहन जब तुम कल मेरे पास आईं, तब मेरे पास गुड़ रखा हुआ था।

ऐसे में, में तुम्हारे पुत्र से गुड़ खाने के लिए मना नहीं कर सकता था। यदि में मना करता तो तुम्हारा पुत्र शायद सोचता कि, महाराज स्वयं तो गुड़ का सेवन करते हैं और मुझे मना कर रहे हैं कि इसे मत खाना। यह बात सुनकर उस स्त्री ने संत की महानता से अभिभूत हो गई।
