ब्रह्मविद्या का ज्ञान

सतयुग में महर्षि दध्यंग आथर्वण अग्रणी ब्रह्मवेत्ता के रूप में विख्यात थे। देव शिरोमणि इंद्र उनकी ख्याति सुनकर एक दिन उनके आश्रम में पहुँचे। इंद्र ने कहा, ‘महर्षि, मेरी मनोकामना पूर्ण करने के लिए मुझे वरदान देने का वचन दें।

महर्षि आतिथ्य स्वीकार को बहुत महत्त्व देते थे, अतः उन्होंने वचन देकर उनसे बैठने को कहा। महर्षि ने पूछा, ‘अतिथिवर, आप अपना परिचय दें।’ इंद्र ने बताया, ‘मैं देवराज इंद्र हूँ। स्वर्ग से आपके पास ब्रह्मविद्या प्राप्त करने की अभिलाषा से आया हूँ।’

महर्षि यह सुनते ही चिंतातुर हो उठे। वे शास्त्र के इस वचन को जानते थे कि विद्या दान सुपात्र को ही किया जाना चाहिए। कुपात्र को दी गई विद्या का परिणाम राष्ट्र व समाज के लिए अहितकर होता है।

इंद्र स्वर्ग के भोगों का लोलुप है, इसलिए वह ब्रह्मविद्या का अधिकारी नहीं हो सकता। मुनि सोचने लगे कि उन्हें क्या करना चाहिए। उन्होंने युक्ति से काम लिया।

इंद्र को उपदेश देते हुए कहा, ‘देवराज, भोगों में आसक्ति कभी कल्याणकारी नहीं हो सकती। परम तत्त्व की प्राप्ति के लिए मन की निर्मलता, भोगों के प्रति विरक्तता आवश्यक है। यदि योग का आश्रय लेना है, तो सबसे पहले भोग की लालसा पर विजय पानी चाहिए।’

इंद्र समझ गए कि महर्षि उन जैसे भोग में आसक्त कुपात्र को ब्रह्मविद्या नहीं देने वाले हैं। इसलिए विदा लेते हुए क्रोध में कहा, ‘मुनिवर, यदि इस रहस्यमय विद्या को आपने अन्य किसी को दिया, तो मेरा कोपभाजन आपको बनना पड़ेगा।’ फिर भी क्रोधित न होकर महर्षि ने इंद्र को ससम्मान विदा किया।

English Translation

In Satyuga, Maharishi Dadhyang Atharvan was famous as a leading Brahmavetta. Dev Shiromani Indra, hearing his fame, reached his ashram one day. Indra said, ‘Maharishi, promise to grant me a boon to fulfill my wish.

Maharishi used to give great importance to accepting hospitality, so he promised him to sit. Maharishi asked, ‘Guest, please introduce yourself.’ Indra said, ‘I am Devraj Indra. I have come to you from heaven with the desire to acquire Brahmavidya.’

The Maharishi got worried on hearing this. He knew the word of the scriptures that the donation of education should be done only to the deserving. The result of the education given to the wicked is harmful to the nation and society.

Indra is a glutton of the pleasures of heaven, so he cannot be a possessor of theosophy. The sages started thinking what they should do. He did the trick.

While preaching to Indra, he said, ‘Devraj, attachment to pleasures can never be beneficial. For the attainment of the Supreme Tattva, purity of mind, detachment from pleasures is necessary. If you want to take refuge in yoga, then first of all you need to overcome the craving for enjoyment.

Indra understood that Maharishi is not going to give Brahmavidya to the wicked, who are enamored of such enjoyment. Therefore, taking farewell he said in anger, ‘Munivar, if you have given this mystical knowledge to someone else, then you will have to be my wrath.
