1893 में शिकागो में विश्व धर्म सम्मेलन चल रहा था। स्वामी विवेकानंद भी उसमें बोलने के लिए गये हुए थे।11सितंबर को स्वामी जी का व्याखान होना था। मंच पर ब्लैक बोर्ड पर लिखा हुआ था- हिन्दू धर्म – मुर्दा धर्म। कोई साधारण व्यक्ति इसे देखकर क्रोधित हो सकता था , पर स्वामी जी भला ऐसा कैसे कर सकते थे| वह बोलने के लिये खङे हुए और उन्होने सबसे पहले (अमरीकावासी बहिनों और भाईयों) शब्दों के साथ श्रोताओं को संबोधित किया। स्वामीजी के शब्द ने जादू कर दिया, पूरी सभा ने करतल ध्वनि से उनका स्वागत किया।

इस हर्ष का कारण था, स्त्रियों को पहला स्थान देना। स्वामी जी ने सारी वसुधा को अपना कुटुबं मानकर सबका स्वागत किया था। भारतीय संस्कृति में निहित शिष्टाचार का यह तरीका किसी को न सूझा था। इस बात का अच्छा प्रभाव पङा। श्रोता मंत्र मुग्ध उनको सुनते रहे, निर्धारित 5 मिनट कब बीत गया पता ही न चला। अध्यक्ष कार्डिनल गिबन्स ने और आगे बोलने का अनुरोध किया। स्वामीजी 20 मिनट से भी अधिक देर तक बोलते रहे|

स्वामीजी की धूम सारे अमेरिका में मच गई। देखते ही देखते हजारों लोग उनके शिष्य बन गए। और तो और, सम्मेलन में कभी शोर मचता तो यह कहकर श्रोताओं को शान्त कराया जाता कि यदि आप चुप रहेंगे तो स्वामी विवेकानंद जी का व्याख्यान सुनने का अवसर दिया जायेगा। सुनते ही सारी जनता शान्त हो कर बैठ जाती।

अपने व्याख्यान से स्वामीजी ने यह सिद्ध कर दिया कि  हिन्दू धर्म भी श्रेष्ठ है, जिसमें सभी धर्मो को अपने अंदर समाहित करने की क्षमता है। भारतिय संसकृति, किसी की अवमानना या निंदा नही करती। इस तरह स्वामी विवेकानंद जी ने सात समंदर पार भारतीय संसकृति की ध्वजा फहराई।
