दीप जलाकर देखो

तीर्थंकर महावीर से एक दिन एक श्रद्धालु ने पूछा, ‘भगवन्, मैं सभी व्रतों का यथासंभव पालन करता हूँ। अर्जित धन का एक अंश दान करता हूँ, उपवास भी करता हूँ, किंतु कभी-कभी ऐसा लगता है कि जीवन व्यर्थ जा रहा है। मन की शांति के लिए क्या करना चाहिए?’

यह सुनकर महावीर ने उसी से प्रश्न किया, ‘क्या केवल धन के दान को ही सेवा मानकर संतोष कर लेते हो या कभी समय निकालकर अपने हाथों से भी किसी की सेवा करते हो?’

उस व्यक्ति ने उत्तर दिया, ‘धनार्जन तथा पारिवारिक कार्यों से नहीं मिलती, इसलिए किसी की सेवा नहीं कर पाता।’ फुरसत

महावीर ने कहा, ‘अपने हाथों से सेवा करने, अँधेरे को दूर करने के लिए दीपक जलाने से जो संतोष मिलता है, वह केवल धन दे देने मात्र से कदापि नहीं मिल सकता। दूसरों को अपने हाथों से सुख देने वालों को ही सच्चा संतोष मिलता है। अँधेरे में भटक रहे किसी व्यक्ति को दीपक की रोशनी में रास्ता दिखाकर देखो, तुम्हें स्वयं दिव्य प्रकाश और आनंद की अनुभूति होने लगेगी।’

एक अन्य जिज्ञासु ने महावीर से पूछा, ‘जैन धर्म का सार क्या है?’ महावीर कहते हैं, ‘जो तुम अपने लिए चाहते हो, वह दूसरों के लिए भी चाहो और जो अपने लिए नहीं चाहते, वह दूसरों के साथ भी न करो, यह जिन शासन है यानी जैन धर्म का सार।’

तीर्थंकर महावीर जीवन के अंतिम क्षणों तक सद्विचारों के प्रकाश से सभी को आलोकित करते रहे।

English Translation

One day a devotee asked Tirthankara Mahavir, ‘Lord, I observe all the fasts as much as possible. I donate a part of the money earned, I also fast, but sometimes it seems that life is going in vain. What should be done for peace of mind?’

Hearing this, Mahavira asked him, ‘Do you get satisfaction by considering only the donation of money as service or do you take time out to serve someone with your own hands?’

The person replied, ‘We can’t get money from family work, so I can’t serve anyone.’ Leisure

Mahavir said, ‘The satisfaction that one gets from serving with one’s hands, lighting a lamp to remove darkness, cannot be obtained by giving money only. Only those who give happiness to others with their own hands get true satisfaction. Look at someone wandering in the darkness by showing them the way in the light of the lamp, you will start feeling the divine light and bliss yourself.

Another student asked Mahavir, ‘What is the essence of Jainism?’ This is Jin rule i.e. the essence of Jainism.’

Tirthankar Mahavira continued to illuminate everyone with the light of good thoughts till the last moments of his life.
