क्रूर राजा का निष्पक्ष न्याय

यह युद्ध कहां हो रहा था, ये नहीं पता लेकिन इसकी प्रेरक कहानी सदियों से दोहराई जा रही है। हुआ यूं कि युद्ध में तबाही का मंजर था। शत्रुदल के सेनापति को पकड़ लिया गया और उसे राजा के सामने पेश किया गया।

सेनापति को देख राजा गुस्से से लाल हो गया। उसने युद्ध की अनुशासन नीति का पालन करते हुए कैदी सेनापति से पूछा, ‘तुम्हारी अंतिम इच्छा क्या है?’ सेनापति ने कहा, ‘बस! एक गिलास पानी।’

सेनापति को पानी दिया गया। सेनापति जानता था कि पानी पी लेने के बाद राजा मौत की शय्या पर सुला देगा।

इस पसोपेश में पड़े कैदी को देख राजा बोला, ‘सेनापति ! जब तक इस गिलास का पानी खत्म नहीं हो जाता तुम्हारी मौत नहीं होगी। ये मैं वचन देता हूं।’ सेनापति ने सारा पानी धरती पर फैला दिया।

वह राजा से बोला, ‘अब मैं इस गिलास का पानी नहीं पियूंगा, अगर मैं इसे पी लेता तो मैं मार दिया जाता।’ आपने वचन दिया था कि उस गिलास का पानी पी लेने के बाद मुझे मार देते।

यदि आप अपना वचन तोड़ना चाहते हैं तो बेशक मुझे मौत की नींद सुला सकते हैं। राजा हैरान रह गया। राजा ने कहा, मेरे वचनों का मूल्य, तेरी जिंदगी से कहीं अधिक है। राजा की यह बातें वो सेनापति नहीं भूल पाया और जन्मभर उस राजा का यशगान करता रहा।
