एक शहर था, जहां एक बहुत धनी व्यक्ति रहता था। उसके कई व्यापार दूर देशों में भी चलते थे। उसके कई बगीचे भी थे, जहां हर तरह के फल लगते थे। जिसमें अनार के पेड़ बहुत ज्यादा थे। जिनको नियमित खाद-पानी उसके माली देते रहते थे।

इस तरह उसकी आय दिन दुगनी और रात चौगुनी होती गई। उस रईस व्यक्ति की एक खास बात यह थी कि शिशिर ऋतु आते ही वह अपने बगीचे के अनारों को चांदी के थाल में रख दिया करता था। और सामने एक तख्ती लगी होती थी। जिस पर लिखा होता था, ‘आप कम से कम एक अनार लेकर ही जाएं।’

लोग तख्ती पर लिखे वाक्यों को पढ़ते, इधर-उधर देखते और फिर चले जाते। कोई भी व्यक्ति उन चांदी के थाल में रखे अनारों को उठाने की हिम्मत नहीं करता। तब उस धनी व्यक्ति ने इस बात को गंभीरता से लेते हुए निषकर्ष निकाला और फिर अगली शिशिर ऋतु में उसने अपने घर के द्वार पर उन चांदी के थालों में एक भी अनार नहीं रखा।
