पत्थर मारने पर फल मिलते हैं तो धन क्यों नहीं

एक बार महाराज रणजीत सिंह कहीं जा रहे थे। सामने से एक ईंट आकर उन्हें लगी। सिपाहियों नें चारों ओर नजर दौड़ाई, तो एक बुढ़िया दिखाई दी। उसे गिरफ्तार करके महाराज के सामने हाजिर किया गया।

बुढ़िया महाराज को देखते ही डर गई। वह बोली, सरकार, मेरा बच्चा कल से भूखा था। घर में खाने को कुछ न था। इसलिए पेड़ पर पत्थर मारकर कुछ फल तोड़ रही थी, किंतु एक पत्थर भूलवश आपको लग गया।

वह बोली कि मैं निर्दोष हुं क्यों कि यह गलती मुझसे जानबूझकर नहीं हुई है। महराज ने कुछ देर सोचा और कहा कि बुढ़िया को एक हजार रुपया देकर सम्मान पूर्वक विदा किया जाए। तब सभी दरबारी चुप हो गए। तब एक मंत्री ने पूछा जिसे दंड मिलना चाहता उसे आप सम्मान दे रहे हैं।

तब रणजीत सिंह बोले कि, यदि वृक्ष पत्थर लगने पर मीठा फल दे सकते है तो पंजाब का महाराज उसे खाली हाथ कैसे लौटा सकता है?
