हबीबुल्ला

मैंने सुना है, हबीबुल्ला नामक एक सरदार एक बार तुर्की के राजा कादिर हसन के पास अपने घोड़े को बेचने के लिए गया। राजा कादिर ने पूछा—इसकी क्या कीमत है? सरदार ने जवाब दिया—सिर्फ पाँच हजार रुपए, श्रीमान! राजा ने कहा—मित्र, इसकी कीमत पाँच सौ रुपए से अधिक नहीं है। परंतु सरदार ने पाँच हजार रुपए से कम में घोड़ा बेचने के लिए स्वीकृति न दी। राजा को घोड़ा अच्छा लगा। और इसीलिए उसने पाँच हजार रुपए देकर घोड़ा खरीद भी लिया और साथ ही यह भी कहा कि दोस्त, तुम मुझे ठग रहे हो। सरदार कुछ नहीं बोला और चुपचाप रुपए अपनी जेब में रख लिए और इसके बाद वह पलटकर गजब की तेजी से उसी घोड़े पर चढ़ा और तीर की तरह राजमहल से बाहर निकल गया। राजा कादिर ने अपने बीस घुड़सवारों को सरदार हबीबुल्ला को पकड़ने के लिए भेजा। दिन—भर पीछा करने के बाद भी वह सरदार पकड़ा न जा सका।
दूसरे दिन वही सरदार राजा कादिर हसन के दरबार में हाजिर हुआ। उसने पाँच हजार रुपए राजा के सामने रख दिए और कहा कि आपको रुपए रखने हों रुपए रख लें, घोड़ा रखना हो घोड़ा रख लें।
सबूत दे दिया उसने घोड़े की ताकत का। और क्या सबूत चाहिए, तुम्हारे बीस घुड़सवार दिन—भर पीछा करके भी धूल ही खाते रहे, घोड़े के पास भी न पहुँच सके। और क्या सबूत चाहिए? राजा ने सिर झुका लिया। पाँच हजार रुपए घोड़े के दाम दिए और पाँच हजार पुरस्कार भी।
प्रमाण दो। अगर लोग अधार्मिक हैं तो सिर्फ इसीलिए अधार्मिक हैं कि तुम्हारे धर्म से प्राण निकल गए हैं, प्रमाण निकल गए हैं। तुम्हारा धर्म निस्तेज पड़ा है। तुम्हारा धर्म केवल बुद्धुओं को राजी कर पा रहा है। बुद्धिमानों को राजी नहीं कर पा रहा है। और खयाल रखना, जब भी धर्म सिर्फ बुद्धुओं को राजी कर पाता है, तो दो कौड़ी का हो जाता है। जब धर्म बुद्धिमानों को राजी करता है, तभी उसमें कुछ मूल्य होता है।

English Translation

I have heard, a chieftain named Habibullah once went to the Turkish King Qadir Hasan to sell his horse. King Qadir asked — what is the cost? Sardar replied – Only five thousand rupees, sir! The king said – Friend, it does not cost more than five hundred rupees. But Sardar did not approve to sell the horse for less than five thousand rupees. The king liked the horse. And that’s why he bought a horse by giving five thousand rupees and also said that friend, you are cheating me. The Sardar did not say anything and quietly kept the rupee in his pocket and after that he turned back and marched swiftly on the same horse and came out of the palace like an arrow. King Qadir sent twenty of his cavalrymen to capture Sardar Habibullah. Even after a day’s chase, that Sardar could not be caught.
The next day the same Sardar attended the court of King Qadir Hasan. He put five thousand rupees in front of the king and said that you should keep the money, keep the horse, keep the horse, keep the horse.
He gave proof of the strength of the horse. And what proof is needed, your twenty horsemen kept on chasing and dusting throughout the day, they could not reach even the horse. What more proof is needed? The king bowed his head. Five thousand rupees were given to the horse and five thousand prizes were also given.
