महादेवी वर्मा हिन्दी की प्रसिद्ध कवयित्री थीं। आधुनिक हिन्दी की सबसे सशक्त कवयित्रियों में से एक होने के कारण उन्हें आधुनिक मीरा के नाम से भी जाना जाता है।

वहां से उत्तर मिला… ‘हम भारत आ रहे हैं। नैनीताल में ठहरेंगे, तुम वहीं आकर मिल लेना।’ महादेवी जी ने अपनी सारी संपत्ति दान कर दी। वह नैनीताल पहुंची। सिंहासन पर गुरुजी बैठे थे। उन्होंने चेहरे को पंखे से ढंक रखा था। उन्हें देखने को महादेवी दूसरी ओर बढ़ीं, उन्होंने मुंह फेरकर फिर से चेहरा ढक लिया। वे देखने की कोशिश करती और महास्थविर चेहरा ढक लेते। ऐसा कई बार हुआ।

जब सचिव महोदय महादेवी जी को बाहर तक छोड़ने आए तो उन्होंने अंदर घटित घटना के बारे में उनसे पूछा। माहस्थविर चेहरा क्यों छिपा रहे थे ? सचिव ने बताया, वे स्त्री का मुख दर्शन नहीं करते हैं। यह उत्तर सुनते ही महादेवी जी ने कहा, इतनी दुर्बल मानसिकता वाले व्यक्ति को वे अपना गुरु नहीं बनाएंगी। आत्मा न स्त्री होती है न ही पुरुष। इस तरह महादेवी जी वापिस घर आ गईं।

इसके बाद उनके पास कई पत्र आए। लेकिन उन्होंने उत्तर नहीं दिया। इस तरह महादेवी जी बौद्ध भिक्षुणी बनते-बनते रह गईं। और उनके रूप में हिंदी जगत को मिला छायावाद का एक महान स्तंभ।
