भारत की पहली महिला प्रधानमंत्री इंदिरा गांधी के साथ मदर टेरेसा की मित्रता थी। इंदिरा गांधी ने मदर के स्वागत में कहा था, ‘उनसे मिलने पर मन में असीम करुणा और नम्रता उपजती है। कोमलता की शक्ति और प्रेम की ऊर्जा महसूस होती है।’

इंदिरा गांधी मदर टेरेसा का बहुत सम्मान करती थीं। जब भी मदर का फोन आता तो वह स्वयं आकर बात किया करती थीं। उन्होंने अपने निजी सचिव को हिदायत दी थी कि जब भी मदर टेरेसा का फोन आए, उन्हें तुरंत सूचित किया जाए।

एक बार दिल्ली के शिशु भवन में केवल चावल बचे हुए थे। दाल, सब्जियां लगभग खत्म हो चुकी थीं। इसी बीच अचानक प्रधानमंत्री के किचिन गार्डन की सब्जियों से भरी वैन मिशनरीज ऑफ चैरिटी के मुख्य द्वार में दाखिल हुई। प्रधानमंत्री की पुत्रवधु सोनिया गांधी और वर्तमान में कांग्रेस अध्यक्ष मदर के नाम पर दो पंक्तियों के नोट के साथ ढेरों सब्जियां भेज दिया करती थीं।

इंदिरा गांधी के प्रधानमंत्री काल में मदर टेरेसा को विदेशी मुद्रा कानून से छूट दे दी गई थी। मदर टेरेसा को अपने कार्यों के लिए विदेशों से लाखों डॉलर प्रतिवर्ष मिलते थे। इसके अतिरिक्त विभिन्न पुरस्कारों में सैकड़ों डॉलर मिलते थे।

मदर टेरेसा इस धन को कुछ विदेशों में जमा रखना चाहती थीं। विदेशों में नए होम खोलने और पुराने होम चलाने, तथा उनके विस्तार के लिए विदेशी मुद्रा की आवश्यकता होती थी। मदर चाहती थीं कि विदेश से मिले सारे धन का उपयोग केवल भारत में ही न हो, बल्कि भारत के बाहर भी कई गरीब देशों में इसका उपयोग हो सके। विदेशी मुद्रा कानून में छूट से मदर को विश्व के कई भागों में काम करने की सुविधा मिल गई थी।
