कर्तव्य पूरा करना हर व्यक्ति का कर्तव्य है

पूना (महाराष्ट्र) के एक न्यू इंग्लिश हाईस्कूल में समारोह चल रहा था। मुख्य द्वार पर एक स्वयंसेवक नियुक्त था, जिसे यह कर्तव्य दिया गया कि वह हर आने वाले अतिथि का अभिवादन करे। इस कार्यक्रम में उस समय मुख्य अतिथि के रूप में मुख्य न्यायाधीश महादेव गोविंद रानाडे आए।

जैस ही वे वहां पहुंचे तो उस स्वयं सेवक ने उन्हें रोक कर निमंत्रण पत्र की मांग की। रानाडे ने शालीनता से कहा, ‘मेरे पास निमंत्रण पत्र नहीं है।’ तब स्वयंसेवक ने कहा, ‘क्षमा करें आप अंदर नहीं जा सकते हैं।’

मुख्य द्वार पर रानडे को देखकर स्वागत समिति के सदस्य तुरंत वहां पहुंचे। वह उन्हें अंदर ले जाने लगे। तब उस स्वयंसेवक ने कहा, ‘यदि मेरे कर्तव्य को कोई पूरा नहीं करने देगा तो में यह कर्तव्य कैसे निभाउंगा। भेदभाव की नीति मुझे बिल्कुल पसंद नहीं।’

आगे चलकर यही स्वयंसेवक गोपाल कृष्ण गोखले के नाम से मशहूर हुआ।

Seeing Ranade at the main gate, members of the welcome committee immediately arrived there. They started taking them in. Then the volunteer said, ‘If I do not fulfill my duty, how will I do this duty?’ I do not like the policy of discrimination. ‘

This volunteer later became known as Gopal Krishna Gokhale.
