कंजूस सेठ

एक बार धनिचंद नाम का एक सेठ था। वह बहुत कंजूस था। उसके पास कोई भी नौकर ज्यादा दिन तक नहीं टिकता था क्योंकि वह काम पर रखने से पहले नौकर के सामने तीन शर्त रख देता था।

जिसको कोई भी पूरी नहीं कर पाता था। एक दिन मदन नाम का एक लड़का सेठ के पास नौकरी मांगने आया। वह सेठ से बोला वह बहुत दूर से आया है इसलिए उसको कुछ दे दे। सेठ बोला ठीक है मै तुमको नौकरी पर तो रख लूंगा लेकिन मेरी तीन शर्त है।

मदन ने शर्त पूछी। सेठ बोला की तुमको दिन में या रात में जब भी में कोई काम बोलू तुमको वह करना पड़ेगा। दूसरी शर्त तुमको दिन में केवल एक बार ही भोजन मिलेगा। तीसरी शर्त यदि तुम खुद नौकरी छोड़ कर जाते हो तो तुमको मुझे एक साल का पैसा देना होगा।

मदन सेठ की सारी शर्त मान गया। सेठ बहुत कंजूस था। वह मदन को गोदाम से भारी भारी बोरियाँ लाने को कहता और दिन में केवल एक बार ही सूखा भोजन देता था। जिससे वह दिन प्रतिदिन कमजोर होता जा रहा था।

कुछ दिन तक ऐसा ही चलता रहा। एक दिन सेठ की बीवी ने उसको भोजन में बहुत कम रोटी दी। मदन ने बोला इतना काम करने के बाद इतना कम भोजन तो सेठ ने बोला तू काम ही कितना करता है। मदन कुछ दिन बाद सेठ से नौकरी छोड़ने को बोला। सेठ ने उसको शर्त याद दिलाई। मदन ने अपनी माँ के कंगन बेचकर सेठ को पैसे दिए और गांव लौट आया।

एक दिन गांव में मदन को उसका दोस्त रमेश मिल गया। रमेश ने मदन से परेशानी का कारण पूछा तो मदन ने सारी बात रमेश को बता दी। रमेश ने सारी बात सुनकर सेठ का पता पूछा और मदन को चिंता न करने को कहा। रमेश उस सेठ के पास गया और उससे काम माँगा।

सेठ ने उसको वहीं तीन शर्त बताई। रमेश बोला सेठ जी मै तो आपकी तीन शर्त मानने के लिए तैयार हूँ लेकिन आपको भी मेरी एक शर्त को मानना होगा। यदि आप मुझको नौकरी से निकालते है तो आपको मुझे एक साल की पगार देनी होगी

सेठ ने सोचा ऐसी नौबत नहीं आएगी और उसकी बात मान गया। रमेश कुछ दिन तक काम करता रहा। एक दिन सेठ रमेश को बोला जाकर गोदाम से एक बोरी लेकर आओ फिर उसमे ताला लगा देना।

उसने सेठ को सबक सिखाने की सोची उसने बोरी निकालने के बाद गोदाम का ताला बंद नहीं किया जिससे चोर उसकी सारी बोरी लेकर चले गए। सेठ ने अगले दिन रमेश से पूछा तो रमेश बोला उसने तो ताला लगाया था शायद चोर ताला भी तोड़ कर ले गए।

एक दिन सेठानी ने रमेश को बाजार से लकड़ी का गठर लाने को कहा। लकड़ी लाने के बाद रमेश ने पूछा यह लकड़ी का गठर कहाँ पर रखू। सेठानी ने गुस्से में बोला मेरे सिर पर रख दे। रमेश ने ऐसा ही किया लकड़ी का गठर सेठानी के सिर पर रख दिया।

जिससे सेठानी चिल्लाई। सेठ ने रमेश को नौकरी से जाने को कहा। रमेश ने सेठ को शर्त याद दिलाई। सेठ उसको पैसे देने लगा तब रमेश ने सेठ को सारी बात बता दी की वह अपने दोस्त मदन का बदला लेने के लिए वहाँ आया है।

उसने सेठ से मदन के पैसे लौटाने को कहा। सेठ ने रमेश को मदन के पैसे लौटा दिए। रमेश ने गांव आकर पैसे मदन को दिए। जिससे मदन बहुत खुश हो गया।

English Translation

Once there was a Seth named Dhanichand. He was very stingy. No servant could stay with him for long because he used to put three conditions before the servant before he was hired.

Which no one could accomplish. One day a boy named Madan came to Seth asking for a job. He said to Seth, he has come from far away, so give him something. Seth said okay I will keep you on the job but I have three conditions.

Madan asked condition. Seth said that whenever I tell you any work during the day or at night, you will have to do it. The second condition is that you will get food only once in a day. Third condition, if you leave your job yourself then you will have to give me one year’s money.

Madan agreed to all the condition of Seth. Seth was very stingy. He would ask Madan to bring heavy sacks from the godown and give dry food only once a day. Due to which he was getting weaker day by day.

It went on like this for some days. One day Seth’s wife gave him very little bread in his meal. Madan said after doing so much work, so little food, Seth said how much work you do. After a few days, Madan asked Seth to leave the job. Seth reminded him of the condition. Madan sold his mother’s bracelets, gave money to Seth and returned to the village.

One day Madan found his friend Ramesh in the village. When Ramesh asked Madan the reason for the problem, Madan told the whole thing to Ramesh. After hearing all this, Ramesh asked Seth’s address and asked Madan not to worry. Ramesh went to that Seth and asked him for work.

Seth told him three conditions there. Ramesh said Seth ji, I am ready to accept your three conditions but you also have to accept my one condition. If you fire me, you will have to pay me one year’s salary.

Seth thought that such a situation would not happen and agreed to his point. Ramesh kept working for some days. One day Seth told Ramesh to bring a sack from the warehouse and then lock it.

He thought of teaching Seth a lesson, he did not close the lock of the warehouse after taking out the sack, so that the thieves took away all his sacks. When Seth asked Ramesh the next day, Ramesh said that he had locked the lock, perhaps the thieves broke the lock and took it away.

One day Sethani asked Ramesh to bring a bundle of wood from the market. After bringing the wood, Ramesh asked where to keep this bundle of wood. Sethani said angrily, put it on my head. Ramesh did the same and put a bundle of wood on Sethani’s head.

To which Sethani shouted. Seth asks Ramesh to leave the job. Ramesh reminded Seth of the condition. When Seth started giving him money, Ramesh told Seth everything that he had come there to avenge his friend Madan.

He asks Seth to return Madan’s money. Seth returned Madan’s money to Ramesh. Ramesh came to the village and gave the money to Madan. This made Madan very happy.
