कौन चाहता है निर्वाण

भगवान् बुद्ध से एक जिज्ञासु ने पूछा, ‘मानव जीवन का लक्ष्य क्या है?’ उन्होंने बताया, ‘निर्वाण अर्थात् सभी बंधनों से मुक्ति।’ जिज्ञासु ने कहा, ‘भगवान्, आप लोगों को तरह-तरह के साधन बताते हैं।

क्यों नहीं उन्हें सीधे-सीधे निर्वाण प्रदान करते हैं। आप तो निर्वाण की स्थिति में पहुँच चुके हैं, क्यों नहीं उसे औरों में भी बाँट देते हैं?’

बुद्ध ने उससे कहा, ‘बिना माँगे किसी को कुछ देना ठीक नहीं है। तू ऐसा कर, गाँव जाकर लोगों से उनकी महत्त्वाकांक्षा के बारे में पूछकर आ कि वे क्या चाहते हैं?

उस व्यक्ति ने गाँव के लोगों से उनकी महत्त्वाकांक्षा पूछी और कागज पर लिखकर बुद्ध के पास लौट आया। बुद्ध के कहने पर वह पढ़कर सुनाने लगा कि किसी को धन चाहिए, तो किसी को स्वास्थ्य।

किसी को पुत्र चाहिए, तो किसी को सुंदर स्त्री, किसी को मान-प्रतिष्ठा चाहिए, तो किसी को दीर्घायु।

बुद्ध चुपचाप सुनते रहे, फिर उन्होंने पूछा, ‘क्या किसी व्यक्ति ने निर्वाण की माँग की?’ उसने कहा, ‘नहीं प्रभु, एक भी व्यक्ति ऐसा नहीं मिला, जिसने निर्वाण माँगा हो।’

बुद्ध ने कहा, ‘कोई बात नहीं, एक तू तो है, जो निर्वाण प्राप्त करने के लिए तैयार है। चल पाँच मिनट में मन बना ले और पत्नी, पुत्रों, धन संपत्ति का मोह त्यागकर निर्वाण प्राप्ति के लिए तत्पर हो जाओ।’

उसने सकुचाते हुए कहा, ‘मगर प्रभु, अभी तो मैंने अपने एक भी पुत्र का विवाह नहीं किया है। भला मैं निर्वाण कैसे प्राप्त कर सकता हूँ! बुद्ध मुसकराए तथा बोले, ‘अगर तू भी निर्वाण प्राप्ति के लिए तैयार नहीं है, तो भला मैं किसी को निर्वाण जबरदस्ती कैसे दूँ?’ वह व्यक्ति चुपचाप वहाँ से खिसक लिया।

English Translation

A seeker asked Lord Buddha, ‘What is the goal of human life?’ He said, ‘Nirvana means freedom from all bondage.’ The seeker said, ‘Lord, you tell people different kinds of means.

Why not give them nirvana directly? You have reached the state of Nirvana, why don’t you distribute it to others as well?’

Buddha said to him, ‘It is not right to give anything to anyone without asking. You do this, go to the village and ask the people about their ambition, what do they want?

The man asked the people of the village their ambitions and returned to the Buddha by writing on a paper. At the behest of Buddha, he started reading and narrating that some want money and some health.

Some want a son, some want a beautiful woman, some want prestige, some want a long life.

The Buddha listened silently, then he asked, ‘Did anyone ask for Nirvana?’ He said, ‘No Lord, not a single person has been found who has sought Nirvana.’

Buddha said, ‘No problem, there is only you, who is ready to attain Nirvana. Come, make up your mind in five minutes and get ready to attain nirvana by renouncing the attachment of wife, sons, wealth and property.

He said hesitantly, ‘But Lord, I have not married even a single son of mine. How can I attain Nirvana? Buddha smiled and said, ‘If you too are not ready to attain Nirvana, then how can I force someone to Nirvana?’ The man silently slipped away.
