लोभ-लालच से दूर

कौशांबी के राजा जितशत्रु विद्वानों का बड़ा सम्मान करते थे। उन्होंने चौदह विद्याओं में पारंगत तथा परम तपस्वी ब्राह्मण काश्यप को राजपंडित मनोनीत किया था।

अचानक काश्यप की मृत्यु हो गई। उनके पुत्र कपिल ने एक दिन अपनी माँ से पूछा, ‘माँ, जब राजा का पुत्र राजा की जगह ले सकता है, तो मैं राजपंडित क्यों नहीं बन सकता?’

माँ ने कहा-‘राजपंडित की पदवी तेरे पिता को विद्वान् त्यागी, तपस्वी होने के कारण मिली थी। यदि तू भी विद्वान् हो जाएगा, तो तुझे भी वह पदवी मिल सकती है।’

वहाँ वह एक सेठ के पास रहने लगा। सेठ की दासी उसके भोलेपन पर रीझ गई। उसने देखा कि कपिल धनाभाव में दिन काटता है, सो उसने उसे बताया कि श्रावस्ती के राजा के द्वार पर जो कोई सुबह-सवेरे सबसे पहले उसका अभिनंदन करता है, उसे वह दो स्वर्ण मुद्राएँ देता है।

कपिल राजमहल की ओर चल पड़ा। वहाँ द्वारपालों ने उसे चोर समझकर पकड़ लिया। उसे राजा के सामने ले जाया गया। कपिल ने साफ-साफ बता दिया कि वह पढ़ाई करने श्रावस्ती आया है और स्वर्ण मुद्राएँ लेने महल में।

राजा यह सुनकर प्रसन्न हुआ और उसे मनमाफिक चीज माँगने की आजादी दे दी। कपिल ने पहले सोचा कि एक सौ स्वर्ण मुद्राएँ माँग ली जाएँ, पर जल्दी ही उसकी लालसा बढ़ने लगी। तभी अचानक उसे गुरु के शब्द याद आ गए कि ब्राह्मण को लोभ-लालच से दूर रहना चाहिए।

उसने तुरंत राजा से माफी माँगी और कहा कि उसे कुछ नहीं चाहिए । राजा ने उसके निर्लोभी आचरण को देखते हुए उसे श्रावस्ती का राजपंडित बना दिया।

English Translation

King Jitshatru of Kaushambi had great respect for scholars. He had nominated Kashyap, a Brahmin proficient in fourteen disciplines and a supreme ascetic.

Suddenly Kashyap died. His son Kapil one day asked his mother, ‘Mother, when the king’s son can take the place of the king, why can’t I become a Rajpandit?’

Mother said- ‘Your father got the title of Rajpandit because of being a learned renunciate, an ascetic. If you also become a scholar, then you too can get that title.’

There he started living with a Seth. Seth’s maid was pleased at his innocence. He saw that Kapil spends the day in money, so he told him that he gives two gold coins to anyone who greets him first thing in the morning at the door of the king of Shravasti.

Kapil walked towards the palace. There the gatekeepers caught him as a thief. He was taken before the king. Kapil clearly told that he has come to Shravasti to study and to collect gold coins in the palace.

The king was pleased to hear this and gave him the freedom to ask for anything he wanted. Kapil at first thought of asking for a hundred gold coins, but soon his craving started growing. Then suddenly he remembered the Guru’s words that a Brahmin should stay away from greed and greed.

He immediately apologized to the king and said that he did not want anything. Seeing his ruthless conduct, the king made him the royal priest of Shravasti.
