मानवता का गुण

ऋग्वेद का एक मंत्र है- मनुर्भव अर्थात् मनुष्य बनो। वैदिक विद्वान् वेदमूर्ति पं. सातवलेकर ने एक सभा में जब मंत्र दोहराया-मनुर्भव, तो एक सज्जन ने पूछा, ‘क्या सभा में उपस्थित लोग मनुष्य नहीं हैं?’

पंडित सातवलेकरजी ने कहा, ‘भाई! हर जीव के कुछ लक्षण होते हैं। यदि मानवता नहीं है, तो कोई मानव कैसे कहला सकता है? लक्षणों से ही तो सुर-असुर के भेद को जाना जा सकता है।

स्वामी विवेकानंद अमेरिका गए हुए थे। भोग-विलास में आकंठ डूबे वहाँ के लोगों को सार्वजनिक स्थलों पर मर्यादाहीनता का खुला प्रदर्शन करते देख वे हतप्रभ रह गए।

उन्होंने भी वहाँ एक समारोह में वेद मंत्र मनुर्भव का उच्चारण करने के बाद कहा, ‘केवल मानव योनि में पैदा हो जाने से ही किसी को मानव नहीं माना जा सकता।

हमारी भारतीय संस्कृति में धर्मेण हीनः पशुभि समानः कहकर कुछ नियमों का, धर्म का पालन करने वाले को ही मानव बताया गया है ।’

उन्होंने विस्तार से बताया कि जिस व्यक्ति के हृदय में दया, करुणा नहीं है, जिसका जीवन संयमपूर्ण नहीं है, जो धर्म अर्थात् कर्तव्यों का पालन नहीं करता, उसे मनुष्य कैसे कहा जा सकता है।

स्वामी रामतीर्थ ने भी कहा था, ‘गुण एवं कर्म के आधार पर ही मनुष्य को इस लोक में मानव, दानव की संज्ञा मिलती है। इसलिए किसी को क्रूरतम् दुष्कर्म करते देखकर सहसा मुख से निकल जाता है-यह तो पशु से भी गया-बीता है।’

बच्चों के जन्म के बाद संस्कारित किए जाने की परंपरा रही है। उसे बताया जाता है कि सत्य बोलो, हिंसा न करो, दुःखियों की सेवा करो। इन सद्गुणों से ही सच्चा मानव बनाया जाता है।

English Translation

There is a mantra of Rigveda – Manurbhava means be human. When Vedic scholar Vedamurti Pt. Satavalekar repeated the mantra – Manurbhav in a meeting, a gentleman asked, ‘Aren’t the people present in the meeting human beings?’

Pandit Satavalekarji said, ‘Brother! Every living being has some characteristics. If there is no humanity, then how can one be called human? The difference between Sur and Asura can be known only from the symptoms.

Swami Vivekananda had gone to America. They were stunned to see the people there, immersed in luxuries, showing open display of modesty in public places.

He also said after reciting the Veda Mantra Manurbhava at a function there, ‘One cannot be considered human only by being born in a human vagina.

In our Indian culture, by saying dharmen hinah pashubhi samanah, some rules have been described as human beings who follow dharma.

He explained in detail that a person who does not have mercy, compassion in his heart, whose life is not restrained, who does not follow dharma i.e. duties, how can he be called a human being.

Swami Ramtirtha had also said, ‘On the basis of virtues and deeds, man gets the name of human, demon in this world. That’s why seeing someone committing the most cruel misdeeds, he usually goes out of his mouth – this has gone past even an animal.

There has been a tradition of children being cremated after their birth. He is told to speak the truth, not to do violence, to serve the afflicted. It is from these virtues that a true human being is made.
