पशु-पक्षियों से सीखो

गंधर्वराज विश्ववसु की पुत्री मदालसा परम तपस्वी व विद्वान् महिला थीं। वे अपने पुत्रों को शास्त्रों के उदाहरण देकर उपदेश दिया करती थीं कि शरीर क्षणभंगुर है, आत्म तत्त्व ही सबकुछ है। सांसारिक मोहजाल में फँसकर जीवन व्यर्थ नहीं गँवाना चाहिए।

मदालसा के पति राजा ऋतध्वज ने एक दिन कहा, ‘प्रिये! तुम तीन बच्चों को ज्ञानोपदेश देकर सांसारिक जगत् से विरत कर चुकी हो। चौथै पुत्र अलर्क को तो राजधर्म का उपदेश दो, जिससे वह हमारे वंश को आगे बढ़ा सके।’

मदालसा ने पति का आदेश शिरोधार्य कर अलर्क को आदर्श राजधर्म निभाने की शिक्षा देनी शुरू कर दी। एक दिन मदालसा ने कहा, ‘पुत्र, हम पशु-पक्षियों के जीवन से बहुत कुछ सीख सकते हैं। कौवे से आलस्य रहित रहने की शिक्षा लेनी चाहिए।

भौरों से रसग्राही और मृग से सदा चौकन्ना रहने की सीख लेनी चाहिए। जैसे सर्प फन फैलाकर, फुफकारकर अपनी रक्षा के लिए दूसरों को डराता है, उसी प्रकार राजा को शत्रु को डराकर आतंकित रखना चाहिए।

राजा को हंस के समान नीर-क्षीर विवेक करनेवाला होना चाहिए। मुरगे से सूर्योदय से पहले उठकर कर्तव्यपालन में लग जाने का ज्ञान लेना चाहिए।

उन्होंने अपने बेटे को सभी के साथ समान व्यवहार करने की शिक्षा देते हुए कहा, ‘जैसे चंद्रमा और सूर्य सर्वत्र समान रूप से अपनी ऊर्जा का प्रसार करते हैं,

वैसे राजा को समस्त प्रजा के साथ समानता का व्यवहार करना चाहिए। वही राजा अमर होता है, जो प्रजा के हित व कल्याण को सर्वोपरि महत्त्व देता है।

English Translation

Madalasa, the daughter of Gandharvaraja Vishwavasu, was an ascetic and learned woman. She used to teach her sons by giving examples from the scriptures that the body is fleeting, the Self is everything. Life should not be wasted by getting trapped in worldly entanglements.

Madalasa’s husband King Ritadhwaj said one day, ‘Dear! You have separated from the worldly world by giving the teachings of knowledge to three children. Instruct the fourth son, Alark, of Rajdharma, so that he can carry forward our lineage.

Madalasa, following the orders of her husband, started teaching Alark to follow the ideal state religion. One day Madalsa said, ‘Son, we can learn a lot from the lives of animals and birds. One should learn from crows to be laziness free.

One should learn to be sensitive to the bumblebees and to be always alert from the deer. Just as a snake spreads its hood and hisses to frighten others to protect itself, similarly the king should keep the enemy terrified by intimidation.

A king should be like a swan with a sly and wise conscience. One should take the knowledge of getting up before sunrise from the rooster and engage in duty.

He taught his son to treat everyone equally and said, ‘Like the moon and the sun spread their energy equally everywhere,

By the way, the king should treat all the subjects equally. The same king is immortal, who gives paramount importance to the interest and welfare of the subjects.
