प्रेम ही धर्म

स्वामी विवेकानंद विश्वधर्म सम्मेलन में भाग लेने 1894 में अमेरिका गए। वहाँ एक बुद्धिजीवी ने उनसे पूछा, ‘आपने असंख्य धर्मशास्त्रों का अध्ययन किया है।

एक ही शब्द में क्या धर्म का सार व्यक्त कर सकते हैं?’ स्वामीजी ने तुरंत उत्तर दिया, प्राणी मात्र में भगवान् के दर्शनकर सभी से प्रेम करो, यही धर्म का सार है।’

उन्होंने आगे कहा, ‘निष्कपट भाव से ईश्वर की खोज को भक्तियोग कहते हैं। इस भक्ति का प्रारंभ, मध्य और अंत प्रेम में होता है। इसलिए धर्मशास्त्रों में ईश्वर के साक्षात्कार के सरल साधन प्रेम, करुणा और निश्छलता बताए गए हैं।

स्वामी विवेकानंद जब अलवर में रहे, तो लाला गोविंद सहाय से उनकी अनन्य मित्रता हो गई। अमेरिका से उन्होंने लाला गोविंद सहाय को पत्र में लिखा,

‘वत्स, धर्म का रहस्य आचरण से जाना जा सकता है, व्यर्थ के मतवादों से नहीं। साधुता ही श्रेष्ठ नीति है और सत्य तथा सद्गुणयुक्त व्यक्ति की विजय अवश्य होती है।

इसी तरह स्वामीजी ने 19 नवंबर, 1894 को अमेरिका से ही आलासिंगा पेरुमल और अन्य भारतीय युवकों को पत्र में लिखा, ‘और किसी बात की आवश्यकता नहीं, जरूरत है-केवल प्रेम, निश्छलता और धैर्य की।

जीवन का लक्ष्य ही प्रेम है, इसलिए प्रेम ही जीवन है। यही जीवन का एकमात्र गति नियामक है। परोपकार ही जीवन है, परोपकार न करना मृत्यु समान है।

स्वामीजी ने लिखा है, ‘सत्य पर हमेशा अटल रहो। धन प्राप्त हो या न हो, ईश्वर पर भरोसा रखो। अपने प्रेम की पूँजी बढ़ाते रहो, सफलता स्वतः प्राप्त होगी।

English Translation

Swami Vivekananda went to America in 1894 to participate in the World Religions Conference. There an intellectual asked him, ‘You have studied innumerable scriptures.

Can one express the essence of religion in one word?’ Swamiji immediately replied, ‘Look at the Lord in a living being and love all, that is the essence of religion.’

He further said, ‘The search for God with sincerity is called Bhakti Yoga. The beginning, middle and end of this devotion is in love. Therefore love, compassion and sincerity have been described as simple means of realization of God in the scriptures.

When Swami Vivekananda stayed in Alwar, he became an exclusive friendship with Lala Govind Sahai. From America, he wrote in a letter to Lala Govind Sahai,

‘Vats, the secret of dharma can be known by conduct, not by meaningless doctrines. Honesty is the best policy and a person with truth and virtue must win.

Similarly, on November 19, 1894, Swamiji wrote in a letter to Alasinga Perumal and other Indian youths from America itself, ‘Nothing else is needed, what is needed – only love, sincerity and patience.

The goal of life is love, so love is life. It is the only speed regulator of life. Charity is life, not doing charity is death.

Swamiji has written, ‘Always stand firm on the truth. Whether you get money or not, trust in God. Keep increasing the capital of your love, success will come automatically.
