परोपकाराय पुण्याय

राजगृह में धन्य नामक बुद्धिमान सेठ रहता था। उसकी पत्नी का निधन हो गया। उसकी चार पुत्रवधुएँ थीं-उज्झिका, भोगवती, रक्षिका और रोहिणी।

सेठ ने सोचा कि क्यों न इन चारों बहुओं को परखकर किसी एक को घर का दायित्व सौंप दिया जाए। एक दिन उसने चारों बहुओं को पास बिठाया और कहा,

तुम चारों को धान के पाँच-पाँच दाने देता हूँ। इन्हें सँभालकर रखना और जब मैं माँगें, उन्हें लौटा देना।’ चारों खुशी-खुशी दाने लेकर चली गईं।

बड़ी बहू ने सोचा कि चूँकि कोठार में धान भरा हुआ है, इसलिए जब ससुरजी माँगेंगे, तो वहाँ से पाँच दाने लाकर दे दूंगी। उसने दाने कूड़े में फेंक दिए। दूसरी ने भी यही सोचा।

तीसरी कुछ समझदार थी। उसने दानों को रेशमी कपड़े में बाँधा और रत्नों से भरी पेटिका में रख दिया। चौथी रोहिणी सत्संग किया करती थी। उसने सोचा कि कोई भी सत्कर्म करने से वे बढ़ते रहते हैं, इसलिए उसने पाँचों दानों को अपने खेत में बो दिया।

उससे जो फसल पैदा हुई, उसने उन्हें फिर से खेत में रोप दिया। इस तरह कुछ ही वर्षों में उसके पास इतना धान हो गया कि उसका कोठार भर गया।

पाँच वर्ष बाद सेठ ने चारों बहुओं से दाने वापस मॉँगे। शुरू की तीन बहुओं ने दाने वापस कर दिए, पर रोहिणी ने सारी कहानी सुनाते हुए कहा, ‘पिताजी, वे पाँच दाने कोठार में बंद हैं और मैं लाने में असमर्थ हूँ।

सेठ प्रसन्न हुआ और उसने बहुओं से कहा, ‘जिस प्रकार धान बोने से बढ़े हैं, उसी प्रकार सेवा-परोपकार से पुण्य बढ़ते हैं ।’ उसने घर की मालकिन छोटी बहू को बना दिया।

English Translation

A wise Seth named Dhanya lived in Rajgriha. His wife passed away. He had four daughters-in-law – Ujhika, Bhogavati, Rakshika and Rohini.

Seth thought that why not test these four daughters-in-law and hand over the responsibility of the house to one of them. One day he made the four daughters-in-law sit near and said,

I give five grains of paddy to all four of you. Keep them safe and return them when I ask for them.’ All four happily went away with the grains.

The eldest daughter-in-law thought that since the storehouse is full of paddy, so when the father-in-law asks, I will bring five grains from there and give it. He threw the grains in the garbage. The other thought the same.

The third one was wiser. He tied the grains in silk cloth and placed them in a box full of gems. The fourth Rohini used to do satsang. He thought that by doing any good work, they keep growing, so he sowed the five grains in his field.

The crop he produced, he again planted them in the field. In this way, within a few years, he had so much paddy that his stash was full.

After five years, Seth asked for the grains back from the four daughters-in-law. Initially the three daughters-in-law returned the grains, but Rohini narrating the whole story said, ‘Dad, those five grains are locked in the store and I am unable to bring them.

Seth was pleased and said to the daughters-in-law, ‘Just as we have grown by sowing paddy, in the same way virtue increases by service and charity.’ He made the younger daughter-in-law the mistress of the house.
